Hello, My gggg grandfather was Robert Cowan (Cowans), he was a mariner and married Hannah Woodfield 27/12/1823 in Sunderland. They had 5 known children together: Jonathan Woodfield born 1825 John Mills born 1828 (my ggg grandfather) Mary Ann born 1831 Charles William born 1834 Robert born 1836. Robert Snr must of died before 1841 as Hannah is calling herself 'Ramsey' on the 1841 census although she didnt marry her second husband, george Ramsey, until 1847! Can anybody tell me more about Robert Cowan. I have no idea of his parents or the year he actually died, Any help would be most appreciated Sue

Hi Bill, Thanks so much for your message and information! Sorry it's taken a few days to reply but Iam having problems with my internet connection at home and having to use my work PC to check my emails - not a good idea really! I thought Robert may of been a son of Alexander Cowan and have found the whole family fascinating! Iam a present, waiting for the marriage certificate of Hannah Cowens (nee Woodifield) to George Ramsey, hopefully I'll get it today, I think you could be right about waiting to marry if Robert had been possibly 'lost at sea'. I have noticed that your direct descendant, Jonathan Woodifield Cowan, named his first child, Margaret Ramsey Cowans, so he must of been on good terms with George! My ggg grandfather, John Mills Cowans, had a colourful life. His middle name does indeed come from his maternal grandmother, Margaret Mills. I thought Jonathan Woodifield had been married before he married Margaret but I didnt think she was his third wife, although there is a large age difference between them! Was he married to a Elizabeth Loff (7/2/1793) directly before Margaret and did they have a child, Lyddia born that year? Hopefully I'll not be repeating to much information that you already have but: John Mills Cowan married Isabella Renney on 7/3/1847 in Sunderland Parish Church. Witnessess to the marriage were James Renney (Isabella's father) and Ann Woodifield. They went on to have 5 surviving children: Robert James born 1846 (before the marriage) Margaret Ann (my gg grandmother) born 2/7/1848 Edward Downs born 1850 (named after Isabella's mother, Ann Downs). He is in the Sunderland Union Workhouse in 1881 listed as a 'shoemaker' but an 'idiot from birth' Hannah born 1854 John G born 1860.
Isabella died in 1865 and the following year John marries for a second time to Margaret Palmer. In 1871 they are living in Spring Garden Lane with John's youngest child, John G and Margaret's own daughter, Margaret who had been born abt 1854.
By 1881 John's second wife is in Durham Jail (her crime is unknown) and by 1891 John has married again to Ann (sorry, my file is at home so this is all memory!) as was living in Newcastle! Unfortunately, I too, can't find a death date for him either - as yet!!
Margaret Ann Cowan married William Wilson Gray on 27/11/1869. William was a joiner/cartman and they were living in Burleigh street when their third child, Thomas was born in 1873. I havent got my 'Wilson' file with me but as I recall, the family moved to Gilesgate before 1881 where William died in 1889. I think him and Margaret had 8 or 9 children in total the youngest only a year when he died. I can give you all the details in a further mail if you wish. Thomas Wilson (my g grandfather) married Sarah J Wilkinson in 1903 and their first child, Margaret Annie (named after Margaret Ann Cowans) is my grandmother.
I hope you find this of some use, obviously any information you may have would be great to hear and I can 'fill you in' on my side of the family too if you wish!
Sue
