Hi .....here is some more info on the pub for you.
Another book called "The Inns & Taverns of Lake St " produced in 1988. Again by Maureen Brown & June Masters.
" The last inn whose site was in Lkae St is known as the Bell & Woolpack at number 47,near the junction of Dudley St. The licence was first granted in 1791. In Bevan's listing of 1819 it was owned bty J Rogers and occupied by J Powel. Between 1828-1928 it had 12 publicans. The last was Albert Wade in 1928 and by 1931 it had ceased trading.
They state that it was well know to locals but that they have been unable to find a photo of the pub.
I have a name for a contact which I will pm to you.
Well the MayDay fair got off to a very wet start on Monday with it raining till after 1pm. I went to meet the local Archaelogical & History society to see who could help. Unfortunatley I missed Colin in person but did get to speak to Maureen who co-wrote the books. She has lots of information about the sale of the pub and all the neighbours in 1858. Would you like me to ask her for some copies as she was willing to let me have photo-copies for you?
I phoned Colin last night..he hoped I was going to say I had a photo! He has photo's of all but 3 pubs that used to be in Leighton Buzzard and the Bell & Woolpack is one of those. He does know where the large collection that I have seen is now but only via another friend and there is not one in that which is a shame. He is always on the look out and has also given me more names of local photographers to look out for in post cards so I will look when I am out.
Let me know if the info on the pub history would be useful. How far back have you Henry's family? As the Rogers name pops up a couple of times in the history.
Hi Tazzie, Firstly many thanks for all your help in researching the photo & info on the Pub. I really appreciate it. Info I have on Thomas Hedges R. through the census. 1851 occ. Butcher -Res. Chamberlain St, Leighton Buzzard. 1861 occ. Brewer Journeyman Res. 22 Parrotts Piece, L/B. 1871 Brewer & Publican Res. 36 Lake St, L/B. 1881 Publican Bell & Woolpack,Lake St, L/B. It looks like Thomas was not at Bell & Woolpack in 1858 & I don't think anyone else in the family was in this pub but would be great to get info re sale of pub & neighbours. My Grandfather Henry's family - I have is - John R. married Elizabeth ATHIS 1.4.1725 L/B - son William married Lettice BEAL - son John (we haven't found his birth or christening as yet in parish records) married Mary ASHBY but he inherited from his Aunt Ann & Uncle Charles BEAL's will- the farm at Mentmore. They had 15 children- son Joseph married Esther HEDGES - publicans at The Dove - Wing in the 1861,1871 census. These are Thomas's parents. Henry's brother & sisters also were associated with pubs in L/B in 1891- Buffalo Inn,White Horse Inn,Greyhound. By 1901 they had left L/B. Very interested to see HEDGES are a family you are researching. Esther was a daughter of William & Elizabeth ? HEDGES but that is another story. regards, Margaret.
In the sale of the pub in 1858 a Thomas Rogers is mentioned as a neighbour as be at the malt house. Also a Henry Parrott. The sum was £630 in 1858 a lot of money but I think that included more than one property. I will ask for the information from Maureen and June and give them the other details you have mentioned to help them build a bigger picture.
Yes I have Hedges over in Cheddington William b @1815 son of Richard and Elizabeth Hitchcock,he married Jane Lambourne .
Hi Tazzie, Just to let you know that my 86 year old cousin who lives in Luton has sent me a copy of "The Inns and Taverns of Lake Street" Aren't I lucky. I had no luck ordering it from NZ through the book dealers. My Great Grandfather Thomas surname spelt as Roger not Rogers is listed as publican in 1880. Great Book. regards, Margaret.
