'Ministerial Student' records on Isle of Wight
« on: Tuesday 13 March 07 21:42 GMT (UK) »

Hi

I was wondering whether someone could give me some advice on where to look for records on Isle of Wight.

I have David Roberts buried in Ynysybwl, in 1899, but on the burial records it states he was a 'Ministerial Student' at the time of his death on Isle of Wight.

Does anyone know how/where I can find out where he would have been studying on I.O.W.?

Regards
Sandie

His death was registered in the Godshill area of the island.

There is a map of the island's districts here:

He may not have been studying on the island - he may have been there for his health.  He was only 25.  It may be worth checking some directories:

Little Nell,

Thanks for the quick reply and links.

I never thought of the health issue, it would make sense.

Thanks again

I only thought of it because I know of some relatives of himself who normally lived in Lancashire, but who were found on the Isle of Wight at census time.  I believe there was TB in the family.

Nell,

When you mentioned health, I thought of TB.  I suppose the only way to find out for sure is to get the death certificate -  I usually only purchase the certs. for direct ancestors, but I might just have to make an exception this time.

Sorry, me again!

Following Nell's suggestion of a health problem,  does anyone know if there was a hospital/sanitarium in the Godshill area  -  I've tried searching, but as usual I came up with nothing - if so, would there be any surviving records?

Hi,

He could have been in St Catherine's Home or the hospital in Ventnor, these were in the Godshill registration district  Smiley

Hello Sandie..did you find out about the hospital ??
I live in Ventnor where the TB hospital used to be. It was a magnificent building that was knocked down in the 60's and is now the Botanic gardens. There is a lot written about it. If you need any info I can try to find out more

Hi Jacki

Thanks for the offer.  The simple answer to your question is, no.  I tried 'googling' but wasn't successful.  I have to add I never am, I obviously do something wrong!!!

I would be extremely grateful for any info. of the hospital you could pass on.

Thanks again
