Martha MONK 1806 in Burnham
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 06:22 UTC (UK) »

This is a renewed request.

I'm looking for the parents of Martha Monk, who I think was born in 1806 in Burnham, Bucks. She married Thomas Rogest in Burnham in 1826. They had a child, Jane Elizabeth born 1827. She was widowed, and then married Thomas Buckland in 1834 with whom she had 10 children from 1831 to 1848. I have details on all of these.

There is a gap in the Burnham Baptism records between about 1756 and 1810, so I haven't been able to find Martha's baptism.

All I have is this:

25 May 1753 Henry son of Robert and Mary Monk
10 Oct 1756 Ann daughter of Robert and Mary Monk
11 Feb 1759 Robert son of Robert and Mary Monk

and then a gap until

30 Sep 1810 Ann daughter of Robert and Mary Monk

Hi Skull,

I have been to the records office and found Martha Monk born 13 July, baptised 18th August 1805 daughter of Robert and Mary.

Other missing records for parent Robert and Mary are:

27-10-1793 John Monk
02-03-1795 William Monk (birth 20-02)
08-01-1797 James Monk
14-10-1798 Richard Monk (16-09)
28-12-1800 Mary Monk (28-11)
31-07-1803 Sarah Monk (24-06)
20-07-1807 Elizabeth Monk (06-06)

There are also:

21-08-1808 Susan Monk (27-07) daughter of John & Mary
12-11-1809 Reuben Monk (05-10) son of John & Mary

and three early ones:

19-02-1737 Robert Monk son of Robert & Mary
13-04-1740 George Monk son of Robert and Mary
08-10-1780 John Monk son of Reuben and Hannah.

My Monk family also came from Burnham starting with Joseph c. 1797 who I can't find!

Hope this helps

Hi Skull,
I thought I had more - here they are:

All baptised at Burnham to Robert & Mary

04-07-1742  John Monk
18-05-1746  Mary Monk
30-03-1749  Ann Monk
26-05-1750  Robin Monk
17-01-1762  Martha Monk
28-07-1765  Elizabeth Monk
25-12-1791  Robert Monk

Thats all I have that is in addition to the records I received from the Buckinghamshire Family History Society 1750 - 1849.

Thanks purplefrankie

This is a great help. If I come across Joseph Monk c.1797, or any other Monks from further back, I'll let you know!

The only Joseph Monks that I've come across are ...

Joseph Monk: parents Mark and Elizabeth. Baptised 1794 in Stone

Joseph Monk: parents Henry and Elizabeth. Baptised 1796 in Stone

... but I guess you have already discounted these as Stone is in the wrong part of Bucks.

Thanks Skull,

I really am at a loss re. Joseph.  In the 1841 census he was at Burnham with his wife Charlotte and two children and says he was born in County.  I can't find him in the 1851 census, although his wife is still in Burnham.  In 1861 he is living at Acton, giving his place of birth as Burnham, and died in Acton in 1868 age 71.  I have no doubt this is the same Joseph as I was aware of his son going to college in Acton.

This was the main reason I went to the records office.  I have even wondered if the James Monk baptised 1797 was in fact Joseph but, of course, with no proof one way or another I can't possibly add him to my tree.

In the meantime, I will carry on searching.
