And thank you Annie for Joseph's Enlistment record.

I'll print that lot out & study it properly, but the bit that caught my eye was 'keeps a radio'  Grin

Very many thanks to both of you.

He lived on 16(?) Bloomingdale, Chelsea, MA.

DOB:  19 Apr 1896
POB:  New York City
Occupation:  Office clerk for Standard Oil, East Cambridge, MA

He was single, medium height and build, brown hair and eyes.

Betty

Hi Betty: Ownership of a radio in 1930 here in the U.S. was an indicator of how well off economically a person might be. The first radio stations in the U.S. had only been broadcasting for about eight years, and production and sale of radios was only beginning to take off. I'm looking at microfilms of newspapers from the late 1920s, and they are stuffed with advertisements for brand after brand of radio. A typical radio might cost $$200 to 300 then, which is about 165 pounds sterling today. With inflation, they cost a much greater percentage of a person's weekly or monthly pay.

Regards,
John

Hi John
I thought it had to mean something to be noted on a census.
Sound like great uncle Morris did well for himself.
Thank you for that extra information, it's fascinating, & adds 'colour' to the tree.

This didn't mean anything to me, but I've just been told that one of my Aunts spoke about a visit from Uncle Morris from America, she was about 8 at the time, so this fits  Smiley

I wondered if there are any people with this name still in Massachusetts.  Google was very helpful, & found me an elderly gentleman, with a beard. And no clothes. He's a naturist.

Hi there. Just had to add my 2 cents to all of this great research. Try this link:

http://people.yahoo.com/

I added Schloss in Massachusetts and came up with 14 addresses of people with this name in the state. With a family that size there has to be relatives out there.

Thanks for that KathMc, I haven't seen that site before, it's going to be very useful.

This time last week, all I had was a vague story about someone going to America about the same time as my grandfather & his brother came to England. A cousin mentioned that another cousin (who I had lost touch with) had tried to find this person a few years ago, but didn't get very far. We are now back in touch & he sent me what he had found.
I posted the info. on here. He is "astounded" at the amount of new information I have discovered. I sent him the link to this thread, which he had read, so I'm claiming no credit for that, only for knowing where to go for help in the first place  Smiley
