SHEPPARD, William James family information
« on: Friday 16 March 07 05:17 GMT (UK) »

Hi there,

One of my family history lines is just starting to get interesting Smiley

I have a Welsh family who moved to Bakewell Derbyshire. William James SHEPPARD b. 1859 was a painter who left Chepstow and his (possible) wife Mary Robbins. He's popped up in Bakewell in the 1891 and 1901 census with his "wife" as Emily M (they may or may not have been married - I cannot find a certificate). He left behind his son James Alfred Sheppard in Chepstow, but had 3 more kids.

His brother Thomas Edgar Sheppard, a tailor b 1876 in Chepstow has also popped up in the 1901 census as living in Bakewell.

I have put more family info below, but I am hoping that someone can recognise the family and fill in some gaps.

Are there any burial records for the Bakewell district accessible online?

Cheers,
Harrie Phillips.

Hi

Are there any burial records for the Bakewell district accessible online?

All deaths from 1.7.1837 are on the GRO index which you can now search yourself free of charge at
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

Choose “Complete BMD Index Ranges & Images 1837-1983

The partially transcribed index (freebmd) can also be searched on the same website or at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com However -this index is still being compiled by volunteers so is by no means complete

Copy certificates can be obtained online at www.gro.gov.uk

This family has gotten very interesting.... William James ran off to Derbyshire and somewhere along the way picked up his new 'wife' Emily Matilda. His first wife Mary Robins ended up with another man WEBB. No record of divorce, so it's probable that they were both still married, but pretended to be married to their new partners. No record of 2nd marriages either. Both families moved around a lot.

Thanks Alli for the details on Louisa May - she's certainly his daugher. I'm still yet to locate the other 2 sons. I have a possible reference for a birth certificate for Thomas but I have not ordered it yet. Where did you get the details from (so I can reference it)

Cheers!
