Hi Bluie,

Thanks for looking but I don't think that's my man.  I've just got Frederick's marriage certificate and his father is shown as William, a gentleman's servant (?), (the writing is very poor and faded)  and the surname on that is Wakeling.

Hi Nanny - do you want to give us the reference for the 1871 census and I'll have a look and see if I can work anything out - sometime two pairs of eyes are better than one   Wink

Still looking for Frederick, bc 1833, Bucknell, with father William.

1861 census Fred is married and the piece showing him and wife is missing; have him 1871 onwards but would like 1841/1851.

Hi Nanny

Sorry we're not ignoring you, I just can't find him in those years, however I have dug up a few clues as to why not (I think)

From the IGI
FREDERICK DAVIS   Christening:  08 OCT 1833   Bucknell, Oxford, England
  Father:  WILLIAM DAVIS
  Mother:  SUSANNAH WAKENELL

From the IGI
SUSANNAH WAKELING   Christening:  23 AUG 1812   Bucknell, Oxford, England
  Father:  THOS WAKELING  Family
  Mother:  CATHARINE

I still can't actually find Frederick (or Susannah) in the 41 & 51 census
but there is a very good candidate for William Davis at the Manor House in Bucknell
he is a 40 year SINGLE servant born Bicester

Hope this helps a bit

Thanks DebbieG, this line is proving troublesome...so many couples who do not marry.

I think you have managed to unearth my Fred at last; he named his first child Catherine......and she did not marry her "husband" either.

Many thanks,

Hi,

I've found this Frederick transcribed as WAKELEE, but could be WAKELIN,

1841  HO107/885/7  f.6  p.7  Bucknell
//
John BROOM     60    Ag Lab
Catherine         60
/
Thomas MERRY  40  Ag lab
Elizabeth          30
James               7months
/
Frederick WAKEL??    8                         All born in County
//

There is this marriage on the IGI,

John BROOM
Cath WAKENELL
1832 Bucknell, Oxford

so maybe Catherine BROOM is Frederick's grandmother  Smiley

Hi Nanny Jan

Not sure if I'm doing this right as it's my first time of posting - in fact have joined just to get in touch with you about Frederick Wakeling my great great grandfather. Confident from 1871 onwards and I think I've got his marriage right - 1858 to Eleanor (Ellen) Baxter. I'd be grateful for any earlier information you may have. Mary Ann Wakeling was my maternal grandmother's mother.

Kind Regards

Hi alhambra,

Welcome to Rootschat.  Smiley

I have a marriage cert for Frederick Wakeling and Ellen Baxter, 1858, St.Pancras.   Frederick's father shown as William.

I also have death certs for Frederick and Ellen.   I too have the family 1871-1901 but nothing earlier confirmed for Frederick.

Did your Mary Ann marry a Mr Hooper?

Hi Nanny Jan

Thanks for the speedy reply - I'm busy checking the links in these previous postings. I thought they looked promising - I had already begun to suspect Catherine Broom might have been Frederick's grandmother but I'm assuming from your reply you didn't find any convincing evidence. Sent for birth certificate yesterday.

Yes my great grandfather was Gilbert Richard Hooper and I'm not totally convinced about his early years either.

Hi,

One of my mini-walls!  I've not been able to check any parish registers as I live about 100 miles from Oxford.

Whose birth certificate have you sent for?   If Frederick is truthful on his marriage cert then he was born around 1834, so before civil registration.

Reasonably confident I've traced Ellen/Eleanor back to 1841.
