Hi there Iam trying to trace my GGGgrandfather Gilbert Bookless[Buckless,Buglas, Bouglas]. He married Helen Dods 1821 Westruther. On the 1841 census they are living in Galashiels with their family and on the 1851 census Gilbert is a widower still in Gala. It states on this census that he was born in Berwick [going by his age ] c1791. I can't find a birth or death cert for him on Scotlands People [and they do include Berwickshire in their records] Although there are a lot of Booklesses around Coldingham and Coldstream at that time. Gilbert must have died before the 1861 Census. Any help would be greatly appreciated as i have been trying to track Gilbert down for a long time. Many thanks bougie

Hi bougie
Have you tried the Northumberland board? Berwick (on Tweed) as opposed to Berwickshire was/is in Northumberland. I've done a quick check on the IGI but can't find anything. Maybe there are local records available.

The IGI has a patron submission only of the birth of a Gilbert Bookless, 19th April 1783 , Horndean, Ladykirk, Berwick. Parents William Bokkless and Isabel Gillray. Nothing in OPRs.
Worth following up on non-Church of Scotland records.

Hi Bougie I have a couple of Buglass (various spellings) lines in my Husbands family and havn't come across the name Gilbert. William Buglas was down in the 1851 Census as born BERWICK and from his 1855 DC (arn't I lucky) he was born Newfarm in Berwick Bounds. His parents were James Buglas & Jane Clark. I would think Horndean, Ladykirk would come under Northumberland and you may have to contact Northumberland Archives (just google for contact addy). By the way do you know when his wife died and have you the OPR of their marraige. Caraid

Hi Their is an OPR on Scotlands People for Gilbert BUGLASS, 1783 Ladykirk. Father William, weaver, no spouse named, living Horndean. Also Death 1869, BOOKLASS Gilbert 87 Borthwick, Midlothian. Havn't looked at this but sounds promising. Caraid

It could very well be the Bookless one that I found on the IGI, Caraid - well done As it was Bookless on the IGI, I just checked that for the date that I'd found.
It's well worth Bougie getting the image from Scotlands people. Mother is Isabel Gillray on IGI.
