I have located my great-grandfather and great-grandmother who are:
John Stanley b1844 in Keswick, and living in the Village of Newbiggin. Married to Anne Stanley at the time of the 1881 census.
I would like to find out who John's father was, but I do not know his Father's forename. I would also like to discover Ann's maiden name.
Their first child, James was born in 1866 in Cockermouth and they moved to West Yorkshire somewhere between 1885 and 1888. There was a marriage of a John Stanley in Cockermouth between July and september 1863 but I have not got concrete evidence that this was the same John.

I have only just started researching my family tree and as yet have not got any copies of birth or marriage cerificates. All the information I have got is from the internet ((1901 and 1881 censuses) To be honest I do not know what you mean by gro index (which explains how new I am to this).

Hi The GRO is the general records office where you can obtain birth, marriage and death certificates from. If you have a rough idea of the year for a small fee you can search online for the details which would enable you to apply for the certificate.
You can search for the details at www.1837online.com once you have found the correct birth for James you can apply from that site for the certificate which would give his mother and father.
Another site to try for the bmd details and this is free to search http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
always worth looking at that site first, records are being added about once a month or so,so keep checking back.
Here are the family in the 1891 census address North Road
John Stanley, head, married, age 47, tailor, born Cumberland Keswick Ann Stanley, wife, married, age 45, born Cumberland Keswick Mary Ellen Morton, daughter, married, age 23,woollen feeder born Cumberland Millbeck Susannah Stanley, daughter, single, age 20,woollen feeder born Cumberland Applethwaite John Stanley Jr,son, single, age 19,woollen spinner, born Cumberland Applethwaite George Stanley, son, age 17,woollen warper, born Westmoreland Newbiggin Miles Stanley, son, age 15, warper woollen born Westmoreland Newbiggin William Stanley, son, age 12 born Westmoreland Newbiggin Robert Stanley, son, age 10 born Westmoreland Newbiggin Margaret Stanley, daughter, age 8 born Westmoreland Newbiggin Charles Stanley, son, age 6 born Westmoreland Newbiggin Eva Stanley, grandaughter, age 3 born Yorkshire Ravensthorpe Annie Stanley, grandaughter, age 1 born Yorkshire Ravensthorpe Fred Morton, son in law, married, age 25, scribbler cleaner, born Yorkshire Hopton
I have a feeling the grandchildren may well be Morton not Stanley although on the original image they are listed as Stanley.

I had not seen Mary Ellen Morton until you gave me the information. I have not accessed the 1891 census - (incidentally where did you access this?)
I was born and went to school ih Huddersfield living there for most of my life -I know Ravensthorpe well.
My grandfather was Thomas (later calling himself Tom) who is not listed in the 1891 census would have been 21 at the time. He married in 1894, but was obviously not living with his parents for at least three years prior to that
With regard to Helen Morton and a possible relation - you could be right - she is not listed in the household on the1901 census.

Hi
I looked up Mary Ellen Stanley in the 1881 and she was a servant in a household called Dent.
Details forMary Ellen as follows
Mary Ellen Stanley, servant, age 13,domestic general servant born Westmoreland Ravenstonedale.
Address: Village Of Newbiggin Civil parish: Ravenstonedale County/Island: Westmorland
Source information: RG11/5202 Registration district: East Ward Sub-registration district: Orton ED, institution, or vessel: 10 Folio: 100 Page: 6
It is always best to try and check all the census, as quite often children are out in service etc.

You are not likely to find Helen Morton on a census for quite a while yet ! She wouldn't have been born until about 1951 !
