The Green Man, Foleshill, WARKS
« on: Wednesday 21 March 07 09:56 UTC (UK) »

According to my mother, my great grandparents John and Elizabeth Harper ran/owned a public house called The Green Man, Hall Green, Foleshill, Warks.

I have found them on the 1901 census at this very same pub, and also found a picture on the web of a pub called "The Green Man,
Hall Green Road, Foleshill, but unfortunately it looks much too modern to be the same one.

Has anyone any information on the original pub or can anyone suggest where I might find out when it was built etc.

Regards

Fay

Hello Fay
The earliest mention I can find is 1793 and the latest in 1924 when it was sold at auction after the death of the owner J.Stephenson.No photo yet.

Hi Jim

Thanks for the info.  I don't know how long my great grandparents were at The Green Man, they married in 1892 so were obviously not there on the 1891 census, and by 1923 (when their daughter - my grandmother got maried) were running another public house in Aston.

Can I ask you where you found the information regarding when it was built and then later sold.

Hi

Could the original pub have been bombed during the war - Coventry took one h*ll of a battering by the germans and they flatened great parts of Coventry.

The pub may have been rebuilt and given the same name.

JUST an idea???

Thus the photograph of the pub looking to modern

Hello there

Well the Green Man is certainly a blast from the past.

It was on the junction of three roads if I remember rightly.  Aldermans Green Road, Windmill Road and Bell Green Road.

I can see it in my mind as if it was yesterday.  I spent many hours as a child outside in the garden at the back of the pub, while my parents were inside, as was the thing in those days.

It was still standing way after the war and if I remember rightly it was still there in the 1960's

Cheers

Fay
Like Avril I remember the Green Man as a child, in my case just after the war, 1945. I recall it as a fairly modern pub and would guess at it being built after 1901 (but only a guess).

I have looked at the old map suggested by Jim and there is a building shown in the correct position just to the left of the words Hall Green Bridge, so there could have been an older pub on the same ground.  I have found the Green Man, Hall Green on the 1881 census and the occupier was Isaac Smith aged 47 listed as a farmer so maybe it was not used a public house.

Can I ask the web-address where you found the photo of the Green Man, please?

Thank you everyone for your input and thank you for taking the time and trouble to look into this query for me.

Jim, yes the John Harper at 43 Clifton Rd you found in Kellys in 1921 is my great grandfather and the pub was called The Golden Lion.

Dennis,  I am sure The Green Man must have been a pub in 1901  because on the census my great grandfathers occupation is listed as "Publican" working from home.

I cannot remember the web address for the photo of The Green Man that I found cos I was mooching about as you do and I came accross a web site listing pubs in Coventry - lo and behold there was a photo of The Green Man, Hall Green Rd, Foleshill, which as I said looks too modern.

I can send you a copy of this photo if you want as I saved it.

Thank you all once again.

Yes I am sure you are right that it was a pub in 1901 but I strongly suspect it was an earlier building to the one in the photograph, as you say it looks a more modern building.

A booklet I have on the history of Foleshill has the year 1793 against the Green Man but no other comments.

In the 1861 census the Green Man is mentioned and the occupier is Josiah Harban , Publican and Coal dealer and in 1871 Josiah's occupation is blank and his wife is called a Beer Seller. As I mentioned earlier by 1881 the occupier was being referred to just a Farmer.   I have not got the 1891 census details.

Dennis

I was a property surveyor all my working life and I would put the Green Man I knew in my childhood as being of the 1920 era. I suggest the old Green Man must have been demolished after your Harpers left or at least a new front extension built.

I looked through the Coventry City Council site www.picturesofcoventry.co.uk but failed to find any old ones of the Green Man.
You might try emailing Coventry City Council to see if they know.
mailto:coventrydirect@coventry.gov.uk .
Ask for it to be forwarded to the correct department.... probably Environment and Planning.

I also found that the Green Man was taken over by Punch Taverns and is now the Windmill.
There is a more modern photo on http://punchpubs.punchpubs.co.uk/dispCounty.asp?Mode=1&C_ID=32&C_NAME=Warwickshire

You could try an email to Punch Taverns to ask if they know when the present building was built. They should !!

In an earlier post I said the pub was sold at auction in 1924 after the death of the previous owner. This would suggest this referred to the old pub.I wonder if it's then it was demolished and this one put in it's place.

Thank you all once again for your suggestions.

Looks like i've got some letters to write and hopefully will get some answers back as to what happened to the original Green Man.

Will keep you posted on this one.

Best wishes
