How do I find someone in Singapore?
« on: Wednesday 21 March 07 14:50 GMT (UK) »

Having just found that one of my ancestors went on to be Assistant Curator at the Botanic Gardens in Singapore in 1921 (see my posting re Kew Gardens on the Middlesex page) I would now like to investigate this further.

I would welcome any advice as to how to find him and any family in Singapore from 1921.

Any births may be listed in the consular births at the GRO, think Findmy past has an index

Shocked BJC what a lovely area of interest your ancestor has taken you to!

Singapore Botanic Gardens have a wonderful website, have you though about approaching them direct?

Thank you Bob for your suggestion.  I will take a look.

Wendi - I have looked at the web site.  I can only spot an e mail address which seems to be aimed at visitors.  Maybe I will have to use the slow method of writing directly to them. Smiley

BJC!!!!

If you write an email requesting assistance in information regarding Person XYZ who was Assistant Curator at the Botanic Gardens in Singapore in 1921 who could resist you?

My old adage again  Roll Eyes IF you don't ask........

If you have any approximate dates for births marriages or deaths in Singapore, it may be possible to find them in the church records (marriage/ baptism/burial registers). Those that have survived are now held by:

 National Archives of Singapore (NAS)
 1 Canning Rise
 Singapore 179868
 Telephone : (65) 6332 7909

I'm not sure how to set about organising a remote search, but I suggest you call them during their office hours to discuss. Remember they are 8 hours ahead of UK (7 hours as of next Sunday) Alternatively I got this contact email address from their website a few months ago:  grace_tang@nhb.gov.sg.

It's not paranoia if they're really out to get you

You can also use the Singapore version of the GRO.
Births
http://app.ica.gov.sg/serv_citizen/birth_death_reg/birth_registration.asp
Marriage (pre 1961)
http://www.nhb.gov.sg/NAS

From an email they sent me:

Marriage Records
We process searches for marriage records for marriages conducted on and prior to 15 September 1961. If you would like us to do a search, you may fax us the completed form below at +65 6332 3238. We charge a search fee of S$35, regardless of whether a record is found. If found, a certified copy of the marriage record would cost S$70. Please send the form together with a cheque of S$35, made payable to the National Heritage Board. Our mailing address is as below:

National Archives of Singapore
1 Canning Rise,
Singapore 179868
Attn: Yvonne Chan (Ms)

You will need a pretty exact date of birth to start with as their search fees are somewhat high!

Thank you all for your suggestions.  I am waiting for a copy of my ancestors' file to be sent from Kew which may give a few more clues to his life.  I will then make a few more enquiries.  I will keep you posted.
