Hi there I would be very grateful if you could help me with the following family:
Bethune, Robert born 1827, Markinch, Fife. Occup: (at one time) Stationary Warehouseman
Married
Jane Hunter, born 1828, Markinch, Fife.
They had a daughter Jane Bethune, born 14 Nov 1862, Portugal street Glasgow
I am trying to find any record of the two of them in Markinch (and all three of them in Glasgow if anyone has the resources)
Many thanks for your help,
Samuel Adamson

Hi,
Thanks for your message -i appear to have missed it until now! If you could do the look-up for me in the 1861 census in Portugal Street Glasgow that would be great.
Also i just noticed you are researching a few names on the Wirral. I was born and still live in Heswall and know a family of RANDLES on the Wirral.
Best, Sam

I have some information on the Bethune family in Markinch... they had quite an impact here. They had a hotel, now called the Town House Hotel, then called the Bethune Arms, and, interestingly, my Great-Granddad William Kinnes bought it from the Bethunes in the late 19th Century.

Hi Ostler,
I'd be interested to hear the info you have on the Bethunes in Markinch. My family were principly printers, but were also in associated businesses like the paper and stationary trade. Some names include, Robert Bethune b. 1827, his wife Jane Hunter b. 1828 and their daughter Jane Bethune b. 1862.
Jane and her brothers moved to Liverpool.
Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Sam

The only information I have is actually a lot older than what you're looking for... Bethune used to be "Beaton", and the earliest record is David Beaton, Chancellor of Scotland in 1494. I don't know if this is much use to you, but there are plenty of other Beatons throughout Markinch and Fife's history. I'm not sure when the name changed finally to Bethune, and I'm not aware of a paper mill being owned a Bethune. There have been many paper mills in Markinch (Tullis Russell still exists today).
I was sure I had more "up-to-date" info on the Bethunes in Markinch, but I can't find it at the moment.
