murder in Woodstock, Cape Town
« on: Wednesday 11 June 08 05:42 BST (UK) »

Hello

I'm in New Zealand and I'm trying to find out if there is any information available regarding a murder case that happened between the years 1942 - 1950, in Woodstock, Cape Town.
It involved a Austrian immigrant named Fritz Ferdinand BARNACK.

Are there any online/digitised newspapers from that area (Woodstock)? Is any kind soul out there in that part of the world able to do a search for me please?

Many many thanks
Rachel

Hi Rachael,

Try googling "The Cape Times" and "The Cape Argus".  Can't remember the other newspapers' names but there are a few in English and Afrikaans but your best bet would be The Cape Times.

Good luck.

Lots of entries for Barnack in Cape Town come up here:
www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dl
Had a quick look and didn't see Fritz Ferndinand but found George Ferdinand and Johan Ferdinand among others. Might have missed something but you can check yourself.

Hi there
thanks for your help.
Unfortunately the newspapers published in the Cape that are online don't have archives online that go as far back as I need it to. I have seen FF Barnack on the NAAIRS database, but the two mentions of his name are to do with his divorce apparently.

Many thanks

Hi Rachel,

Maybe you can give this a try.   The British Newspaper Library - Colindale, London has over 800 South African newspapers in archives:

http://catalogue.bl.uk/F/?func=file&file_name=login-bl-list

Click on "Search the Integrated Catalogue"
Click on "Catalogue Subset Search"
Click on "Newspapers" - you will find it highlighted somewhere in the text on the page.
Enter "South Africa" (don't type in the " ").

You should keep clicking on "Next Page" until you find Cape Times then just follow the instructions from there.  You will need to read about costs etc., related to ordering any documents.

This website may or may not help you;  I thought I would send it just in case.
