Tracing the PEARCE family - Illogan ?
« on: Friday 23 March 07 05:24 GMT (UK) »

Samuel PEARCE from Cornwall arrived in South Australia probably in 1848 where he married Elizabeth Sarah CHAPMAN from Hobart Town in 1851.

From the 1841 Census there appeared a match with the family of Honor, Prudence, Emma and Samuel (St Hilary).  Joe has very kindly investigated this family for which I am very grateful, and embarrassed.  Embarrassed  The inscription on his grave here, if correct, obviously provided by a surviving family member, says Samuel was born 3 Nov 1824 which is after the christening date kindly supplied by Joe.   Cry  It appears Samel's age in the Census was rounded down.

If all ages may also be taken up, the 1841 Family in the Parish of Illogan of Alexander, Honor, Elizabeth, Francis and Samuel (all family names in South Australia) must be the other most likely match.  (And the last throw of the die.)

If any sks is still prepared to assist you can be assured any help will be most gratefully appreciated.

The Pearces of Illogan certainly had a connection to Australia (but then the whole C19th history of Cornwall is one of a vast diaspora around the world, so that doesn't necessarily signify anything)

From the monumental inscriptions in Illogan churchyard

PEARCE Samuel son of Alexander and Ann PEARCE born 4/6/1850 met his death at the Drift Railway accident 3/7/1884 also Selina his wife born 28/5/1851 -11/8/1938 headstone erected by his brother William Henry Australia

William Henry was aged 10 on the 1851 census.
Though the IGI does not index Illogan parish registers to the period you are interested in, you can order microfilms from your local Family History Centre, which would pinpoint Samuel's baptism.

Further information on Illogan that will also link you to the 'Online Parish Clerk' for Illogan.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/Illogan/index.html#ChurchRecords

Your difficulty of course is how exact that birth date on the gravestone actually is. If not it could bring the St. Hilary Samuel Pearce back into the picture. Does Samuel's Australian death certificate give any more information?

Ages in the 1841 census for adults over the age of 15 are ususally rounded down not up, but any information on one census can be incorrectly noted.

Thank you very much for your reply, Valda, and the information.  I will certainly follow up on your suggestions.

All the original Australian Colonies were separate entities (until 1901 - and still are in a number of ways).  Sth Australia commenced official central registration of Births Deaths and Marriages in 1842, but in the early years very little information, unfortunately, was recorded.  For instance, until about 1908 Death Certificates only recorded Date, Name, Sex, Age, Occupation, Residence, Cause and Place; so "my" Samuel only records Aug 10th 1884, M 60years, Farmer Thomas Plains, [cause], Thomas Plains.  [the age being most likely provided by the same person who arranged the gravestone.]  This is a disappointment because it was not until 1908 when even place of birth [if known] was included.

Marriage Certificates recorded only the most basic information about the couple, not even their respective fathers, and often the age was recorded as FL [full age].  This is particularly difficult for genealogy because it is the early records in particular one wants lots of info.  [Other Colonies, once they got their act together and started official recording, in most cases did much better]

So thank you again,
Jeenie.

(I forgot to add that I have another 1841 census for another family in another county where for some reason all the ages for all members of the family had been increased, but for the same amount so relativity had been maintained, but in the 1851 all ages had been corrected and shown correctly.)

This website mentions another Samuel Pearce from Illogan (I think born circa 1830) who emigrated to South Australia. Perhaps some of the detail and places may coincide.

This website which lists the passengers on the Santipore in 1848

It doesn't necessarily mean all the Pearces on board were in anyway related. Tobias Pearce is an unusual name. There was only one on the 1841 census.

This website gives the obituaries of John Pearce and Samuel Pearce - stating they were on the Santipore in 1848

Is there an obituary for your Samuel Pearce in the local newspaper in 1884?

Thank you for your response, and effort, Valda.  I have looked at it very quickly and will look at it in more detail after this response, which may be a bit hap hazard.

Yes, I have a copy of the Santipore Passenger Listing, but I understand the original has been lost over time and this Listing has been reconstructed from contempory Newspaper reports of Shipping and Passenger arrivals eg, the original would have had names of all passengers, including children, ages, occupation, and where from.  So the Listing is inconclusive.

I was until now unaware of the BURRA PIONEERS Obituaries, thank you also very much, and this now clears up I think what has been worrying - Samuel has been claimed by 2 families as arriving on the Santipore, and now it appears one was probably "my" Samuel, and the other was one of the children who arrived with John "and wife and five children".

There is a Publication Biographical Index of South Australia which has many omissions, and errors.  It includes the 2 x Samuels, but not the John which is now identified (with son Sam) in the Obituary references you so kindly have provided, and this now makes more sense.  There is also a reference to a John PEARCE b c1833 Dev Eng d after 1866 arr 1848 SANTA POER m by 1866 unknown.  Tobias is not included, but he is recorded in South Australia as d 13 Mar 1877 age 49 after having at least 7 children between Dec 1849 and Mar 1872 with his wife Sarah RASLEIGH d 26 Apr 1877 age 47.

[The Obituaries also include a John SNELL from Chacewater Cornwall d 20 Mar 1914 age 80 who has been so easy to mix up with another of my ancestors of the same name also from Cornwall d 9 Jun 1918 age 84, and who is the subject of another separate Cornwall Posting.  Maybe "my" John SNELL also came from Chacewater.]

The amores-wheare.com site definitely references "my" Samuel, and relatives, and includes substantially the same genealogy as I have researched and obtained from local sources and family.  It also includes my father.  I will look at this in more detail later, but from a quick scan both documents are not exactly the same in all detail.  I shall also contact the author later, if possible.  However, this does not negate the original posting attempting to locate "our" Samuel's details, and parents (and hopefully ancestors).

The other 2 sites, particularly the first, will be of much general interest, on further investigation.

There are 2 Obituaries/reports of "our" Samuel's death in the Kadina and Wallaroo Times Wednesday August 13, 1884 referring to his death "on the 10th August, 1884 . . . aged 60 years.  A Colonist of 36 years."  So again there is no reference as to "where from".  Leaving everyone still in the dark.

So still it appears no one has yet been able to trace him back in Cornwall - but Alexander's family's names have been continued in Samuel's children in South Australia;  and what if Alexander moved around Cornwall with his family ?

So thank you again for your attention and help,
Jeenie.

In the 1851 Census, parents Alexander and Honor, and daughter Elizabeth, are all given as born in Illogan.  That would infer that Elizabeth's older siblings Francis and Samuel were also born in Illogan - although not conclusive.   Cheesy

My family come from Illogan,Park Bottom and Camborne. My Great Grandfather was Richard Henry Pearce and my grandfather, Harry Pearce(b. 1921)

Do either of these feature in your records?

Many thanks in advance

Great great grandfather Samuel PEARCE came to South Australia in 1884.

He was the son of Alexander and Honour nee LAURENCE, married 11 Aug 1816.  (Note - the IGI marriage record is wrong !)

The information (above) supplied by Valda has been very helpful - and for which we are very thankful.

We have not tried to trace the descendants of Samuel's immediate family born in England, but realize that the Samuel and William Henry ref the Monumental Insciption from the Illogan Churchyard would be his nephews ie, cousins of great grandfather Alexander Lawrence PEARCE born here in South Australia.

However we have no knowledge of a Richard Henry (other than we note that there is one buried in the Campborne Churchyard), or of Harry.

Sorry.

[ps - what was the "Drift Railway Accident 3/7/1884 - can anyone help ?]

Great great grandfather Samuel PEARCE (baptised 3 Nov 1822 - according to www.familyhistoryonline.net) came to South Australia in 1848 (ie, not 1884 !)   Embarrassed

He married in 1851 and had 13 children, including John, great grandfather Alexander Lawrence, Frank Chapman, and William Henry born 31 Dec 1866.

It appears that Samuel had a brother Alexander born c1818 who according to the 1851, 61 & 71 censuses had at least 4 children, William Henry born 1841, John, Frances, and Samuel born 1851 - and in 1861 Alexander, Widower age 73, was living with this family.  (And in 1851 Alexander 63 was living with his wife Honor 64 - and in 1841 Alexander and Honor's children were Samuel 20, Frances and Elizabeth.)

The Illogan churchyard monumental inscription for Samuel born 1850 seems to infer that his brother William Henry had gone to Australia - as had, apparently, most if not all of the siblings of the Alexander born 1818.

Whew !  Cheers,    Smiley Smiley Smiley

PS - probably there will be a baptism record for Alexander (the one born 1818), son of Alexander and Honor on the familyhistoryonline site, but we do not have
access to it anymore - and it would be interesting to see how many William Henry PEARCEs might be there also.

It appears that Samuel PEARCE who "met his death at the Drift Railway accident 3/7/1884" had a son (another) William Henry PEARCE, recorded as age 10 in the 1891 Census, and 10 months in the 1881 Census.

Would this be your direct ancestor, Mary ?
