Hi Julie
Welcome to RootsChat
Have you confirmed Catherine's details on either her marriage or death certs. or her birth place on any censuses?
I can only see one Catherine that fits in the 1851 Census and mother is showing as Ann. All the family is showing as born in Ireland:
Daniel Docherty 45, ag. lab. Ann Docherty 43 William Docherty 12 Cathrine Docherty 10 Thomas Docherty 6
Address: Main Street Back Court, Duntocher, Old Kilpatrick
Regards.

The IGI details for Catherine Docherty are submitted entries rather than actual extracts from the OPRs which may explain why some of the details don't fit.
Children showing to James Campell and Catherine Docherty on IGI, all post 1855 and actual registrations:
1. JEANIE CAMPBELL OR DOCHERTY Birth: 21 MAR 1858 Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland 2. ANNIE CAMPBELL Birth: 09 OCT 1860 Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland 3. JOHN CAMPBELL Birth: 27 AUG 1862 Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland 4. JAMES CAMPBELL Birth: 28 JUL 1864 Govan, Lanark, Scotland
Their first child Jeannie looks to have been born before they married in Oct. 1859.
Regards.

James Campbell looks to have died probably before the 1871 (this also shows on IGI), I can't as yet find the family in 1871 Census. Catherine looks to have remarried:
CATHERINE DOCHERTY Marriages: Spouse: DANIEL GILL Marriage: 09 APR 1875 Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland
And her likely death entry on Scotlands People, the official pay to view BMD/Census Site:
1926 CAMPBELL CATHERINE Other surnnames: GILL DOCHERTY F age 84 @ OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK /DUNBARTON 501/00 0068

The family's 1871 Census entry, looking like James has died pre 1871 (you will have to check the original image to check Catherine's status, married/widowed), and also confirmation of name of Ann for Catherine's mother:
Catharine Campbell 30, agr. lab. b. Ireland Jane Campbell 12, b. Old Kilpatrick Ann Campbell 9, b. Old Kilpatrick James Campbell 5, b. Govan Ann Docherty 60, Agr Lab Wife, b. Ireland
Address: Thomson's Land, Old Kilpatrick

Hi Monica, Thank you so much for the info....
I can confirm the 1861 census as being my family. Annie Campbell was my gt grandmother. She went on to marry a William Allen of County Sligo but married in Duntocher Scotland 19th Nov 1880.
As for Catherine I do have her marriage certificate to James Campbell 28/10/1859 in Duntocher. she is listed as 19 years old of Duntocher, a spinster and worked as a steam loom weaver. Her parents are named as Daniel Docherty and Catherine Docherty maiden name Docherty . James was 24 years ol of Faifley a bachelor and worked as a cotton spinner. His parents are named as John Campbell and Jane Campbell maiden name Campbell. Seems a bit strange that both mothers have married men with the same surname as their maiden names???
Where did you find the 1871 census ? Was it on Scotlands people ? What is IGI ? Sorry but I am new to all of this.
Regards, Julie

Hi Julie
The information showing on the 1859 marriage cert. I would probably verify from other sources. The name certainly for Catherine's mother looks to have been Ann not Catherine. Whether her maiden name is also Docherty will hopefully show in some of the certificates.
You have 3 ways of trying to verify this info:
Ann looks to have been alive and living with Catherine in 1871 so you should hopefully be able to find her death cert. on SP to confirm what her maiden name was.
You could also have a look at Catherine's 1926 DC. Remember that the info however is only as good as what the person reporting the deaths knew, and sometimes people didn't know and information was missing or errors were made.
You could also look for Daniel Docherty's DC, there are a couple of possibilities on SP for him assuming he died in Dumbartonshire.
The 1871 census is available on Scotlands People or Ancestry's 1871 Scottish Census index.
Regards.

In respect of James Campbell, again you would have to look at his death cert. to further verify his parents' names.
I had a look at possible entries on the 1841 Census (most of the 1841 census has now been transcribed on FreeCen at www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl - good place to search first given it is free to use).
There is an entry for a James b. 1831 with father John b. Ireland and Mrs (no first name) in Old Kilpatrick.
This looks like this family in 1851 and and actually does look a likely possibility for James given that mother looks to be Jane rather than Mrs! and address:
John Campbell 58, labourer, b. Ireland Jane Campbell 57, b. Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire Margret Campbell 26, cotton carder, Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire James Campbell 19, cotton packer, b. Old Kilpatrick Jane Campbell 8, granddaughter, b. Old Kilpatrick
Address: 89 Faifley Road, Duntocher, Old Kilpatrick
Regards.

IGI stands for International Genealogic Index which is available to search free at the LDS site www.familysearch.org
It is particularly good on post official registration records in Scotland for 1855-75. Before this date it includes Old Parish Register entries predominantly from the Established Church of Scotland ((Presbyterian). Whilst some entries are actual extract from official sources, other are submitted entries by members (such as the ones you have found for Catherine Docherty's birth). Sumbmitted entries, whilst useful reference, always need to be verified (they can be plain wrong )
It also only (very few exceptions) includes births and marriages. For post 1855 deaths, you of course have Scotlands People.
You will probably find this link here on RootsChat useful for background on researching in Scotland:
