does anyone have information about The Boat at Whitney?
an ancestor Stephen Arrowsmith was innkeeper there in 1841 and 1851
I have googled and found it is still there but not found a photo yet. Just wondered if anyone had been there and could describe it?

Hi
I have been to The Boat
It is very pleasantly situated along the banks of the River Wye and is frequented by canoeists in the summer, who paddle downstream from places like Hay on Wye and Glasbury - often being retrieved and ferried back by canoe-hire companies.
It is a busy pub, serving meals as well as drinks. It is large and in a very rural situation. A sort of red, Victorian-looking building (and I know little about architecture, can you guess?)
I have to report that the welcome is variable however...
I expect it was better in the past!

the francis frith photograph shows a Victorian looking building. I wonder how it used to look. Maybe get over there in the summer and check out the welcome

I have googled alsorts of combinations on this and cannot even get a date for when it was built but agree its Victorian /Edwardian styling means its not the same building or your ancestors time.

I am going to search for a will now to see if he left one. I don't know much about him or his wife Joanna. Too early for certificates and I don't know if they had children.

Not too early for death certificates which can give a lot of information.
See a death reg in 1855 for a Stephen Arrowsmith in the Weobley District.
There was some road re-alignment and rebuilding back from the river in the past, Whitney Court is now set on the hillside just along from the Boat Inn, but had previously been nearer the river. The Boat is on the drovers routes from Wales, and stands right on the bank of the River Wye now, but the road has been straightened so it sits in its own lay-by by now.
Last time we went there , there were tractors parked all along the road outside and the pub was full of farmers from all over the world who had come to the international ploughing competitions somewhere nearby..... Well worth a visit - there is a small toll-bridge just near which takes you the back way into Hay on Wye.
There are a series of books on Herefordshire pubs by Ron Shoesmith which may give the dates of the Boat.

Had a look in a CAMRA book on Herefordshire pubs and the entry there for the Boat says an early C20 building on a much older site also the site of a former ferry over the River Wye.

Have you looked at any directories of Herefordshire to see the details for Whitney and the Boat. There are only a few that are early, but it would trace it on ?
How old was Stephen when he lived there ?
Whitney gets metions in Kilvert's diary but this is a bit later, but the atmosphere of the area comes over in his writings so well. He visited the Drew family at Whitney Court and also ran for the train to Hay on occasions and the descriptions are quite evocative of the era.

I see the Herefordshire distribution of Arowsmith in the C18 and early C19 is around, Kington, Lyonshall and just into Wales in the area in the west of Herefordshire.

I had a look at directories online but no mention of The Boat in the earlier ones I tried.
Stephen was born (from census) at Eardisley 1788. There is a Stephen on familysearch baptised Eardisley 1784.
He was cousin to my husband's ancestor James Arrowsmith baptised Eardisley 1786.
Stephen's wife Joanna was born Okehampton Devon There is a marriage on familysearch that fits but it took place in London! Not sure how to decide if this is the right one.
getting harder to go backwards so I am spreading sideways and I am trying to flesh out the branches now
