James DOOLEY (convict) from Oxford
« on: Saturday 24 March 07 03:49 GMT (UK) »

Request for any info on James Dooley (the younger)
Born abt 1823 Oxfordshire. Religion-Protestant. Occupation-Painter,guilder,glazier. Convicted on the 9/7/1845 at Maidstone Q S  Kent . Sentence 15 yrs for theft. Transported on the "Joseph Somes" ship to Tasmania(Australia)

This info is from his convict record in Australia.
If he was the younger I presume his father was also James Dooley. Any clues from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I would love to find out abt his ancestry

Hi  I have found a possible - listed as James Dolley baptised 11th September 1822 at All Saints Church in Oxford the son of James & Elizabeth Dolley - ostler of Bear Lane

However when I checked the census this man appears to be in Buckinghamshire in 1871 & 1881.  I notice that he was transprted for 15 years - did he come back?

Thanks for looking Debbie.
James married another convict Margaret Ryan in Australia and had 7 children. Have not found his death certificate as yet It does not seem to be in Tasmania or Victoria and the ones in NSW have too many details that say unknown. I may not ever find it.

Interesting that you can't find a death certificate for him,  I can't find the man I have in 1871 and 1881 in any census before that,  his occupation is given as a Chelsea Pensioner so he must have had some military service.

The baptism I found was in the Oxford City baptism index which is pretty much complete for the city of Oxford and that was the only likly one for a James Dooley born 1821 in Oxford

Undecided

from 1841 - Bromley  Kent
James Dooley  1799 painter born  Ireland
Ann Dooley abt 1800     not born in county
James Dooley abt 1824    not born in county (no occupation given)

Unreal Debbie. Thankyou so much. I reckon there is a good chance it is the right one especially seeing the father is a painter. It is a shame it doesnt mention where James junior was born but if it is them at least it gives me a mothers name Maybe it was Ireland. His convict wife Margaret came from Ireland. Ooh youve got me excited.

Hi - I don't think James Dooley jnr was born in Ireland - it would have said so - I have been trying (and failing) to find his parents in 1851 to see where his mothers birthplace was, it might give us a clue

I wonder if his parents were still living in 1851. They were not mentioned on his convict record in 1845 although that would be pretty young for both to have died .

Im thinking more clearly now its morning. You looked for James in 1821 in Oxford  could it be closer to 1823 as the census says. or somewhere else in Oxfordshire. Maybe that is where Ann and James senior married abt the same time?

Not sure if this is any help or even the same one.
James Dooley abt 1825 Ireland on the 1861 census this one is a soldier. Foot Regiment 29 North Camp
Farnborough.

Would tie in with Chelsea Pensioner later on.

Hi Toby,
Thanks for the info. but I am pretty sure James Dooley the younger was born in England and he was in Australia by 1861.

Hi Debbie ...

Just for information - no sign of a James DOLLEY/DOOLY marrying an Ann on the OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837).

Also, there were no (male) DOOLEYs listed at all on the index.

Hi Pennie,
I suppose that eliminates Oxfordshire and I am back to square one in finding my convict James. There is always a possibilty that the convict records were not accurate.
Maybe he was born in Kent where he was tried.
Thanks for trying and for your info.
