'Butts' Sandwich
« on: Saturday 24 March 07 18:35 UTC (UK) »

Help needed please.

On 1881 census I have family living at Butts, Sandwich St Mary. It would appear that Butts was the wall surrounding the town, so were houses/ cottages built in the wall or adjacent ?

In 1881 and 1891 Head was a Brewers Labourer at this address, by 1901 he was a Spirit Merchant living at Cottage Row, Sandwich.

Had he by this time improved is occupation and living conditions, or was it different address, same old situation ?

Thanks, Mazeppa

Can't help you with where the cottages might have been on the Butts, but if you go to a web site called Open Sandwich you will find the location of the Butts.

Cottage row is nearer to St Mary's Church, shown on the town tour map.

From what I remember more modern houses were built inside the wall, rather than on it. That is, front gardens sloping down from the old wall.

Ref your queries about The Butts at Sandwich.  I am totally new to this site so it's outdated now, I guess.  But in case it's of any use, I also had relatives living at The Butts, Sandwich.  I used to visit them as a small child myself in fact.  My family were the Pay family, who were at the Butts during 1800s.

I don't know if we may have a connection?

Maggie,
If you go the Open Sandwich site, you can post a message. There will be most likely someone who remembers your family.

I went to school with someone who lived in the more modern row of houses.( well they were modern then!) Also my cousin, on his Dad's side had an aunt and her family who lived there.
