Trying to help a friend start her family tree and would appreciate any help. Henry Miles born c1835 Rotherfield (according to 1881 & 1901 census), Baptist minister (1881 census) married Katharine/Catherine (1881 & 1901). Two children (b. Mayfield): Hezekiah (b.1864), Ruth (b.1870). 1881 living at Hope chapel House, Chinese La., Hurstpierpoint (this fits with being a Baptist minister).
Now, I've been searching through The Sussex Weald website (fantastic) and have come up with a Henry Miles correct age and birthplace but not only is his wife named Elizabeth but he's a shoemaker.
Rev. Henry Miles' son Hezekiah was born 1864 Mayfield and for the 1867 directory there's a Henry Miles, shoemaker (also Albert Miles, I think that Henry's brother). I know Henry could have started out as a shoemaker and then become a preacher but the other problem is the wife's name.
There's a lovely family tree, going back several generations, on Sussex Weald website which says that Henry Miles m.1859 to Elizabeth. Am wondering, if this is the same Henry as Rev. Henry, if he married 1st Elizabeth and then Katharine, and if that's the case, who is Hezekiah's and Ruth's mother.
Hezekiah Miles started out as a tailor and later repaired bicycles I'm told, and there seem to be several tailors named Miles in the area.
I thought tracing a Baptist minister would have been fairly simple but I'm stuck! Are there any other local records that might help?

Don't forget that as a baptist he would probably have been baptised between the ages of twelve and sixteen. You should thus look for a baptism record where he was likely to have been at those ages. If you find one it will often give full details of his parents.
The place to start is probably Dr Williams Library which is now in the FRC in London.

Thanks for the reply but unfortunately we are both in Northern Ireland. If, and this is a big if, Henry Miles was first a shoemaker the records point to possibly being Church of Ireland before becoming a minister. Thought there might be church records somewhere which would gives some information about him. A newspaper obituary might also help but at this point we don't know when he died.

Andrea- the family in 1871 is certainly the one we are trying to trace- fortunately not many other Hezekiahs around. It's starting to look like there were a Miles family of tailors and one of shoemakers.
c1864 Hezekiah Miles born Mayfield 1867 Mayfield (directory) Henry & Albert Miles, shoemakers 1871 Henry Miles cordwainer in Mayfield
Will go back to Sussex Weald site and do some more looking around. Many, many thanks for the census records.
Just got your last posting and will keep in mind what you say. Thanks again.

Valda- thank you for the additional information. I think they'll be lots of typing to do for this family tree. My English friend has her parents coming over to stay with her in May and no she'll have lots to talk about!

And your original question from Andrea's census finds and hypothesis
Either Deaths Mar 1862 MILES Elizabeth Uckfield 2b 53 or Deaths Dec 1862 MILES Elizabeth Uckfield 2b 57
and a possible marriage with the first birth a year later
Marriages Jun 1863 MILES Henry St George S 1d 214 WOOD Kate St George S 1d 214
Births Jun 1864 Miles Hezekiah Uckfield 2b 91
1851 census HO107 1659 folio 79 Burwash Wheel Burwash Sussex Thomas Wood 46 Burwash, Sussex, Head Married Ag lab Elizabeth Wood 44 Lamberhurst, Sussex, Wife Married Mildred Wood 16 Burwash, Sussex, Daughter Thomas Wood 10 Burwash, Sussex, Son Katharine Wood 8 Burwash, Sussex, Daughter John Wood 5 Burwash, Sussex, Son Sarah Wood 4mths Burwash, Sussex, Daughter
But I can't find Katherine/Kate on the 1861 census, perhaps Andrea can. to prove this Kate is still alive and somewhere nearby.
Marriages Jun 1859 Richardson Elizabeth Uckfield 2b 183 Miles Henry Uckfield 2b 155
one of them misindexed in the GRO index
1851 census HO107 1640 folio 219 Chapel House Mayfield Sussex Elizabeth Richardson 13 Mayfield, Sussex, House Servant

Anyone still interested in information on Henry Miles Baptist minister (Hurstpierpoint 1881). Henry Miles was the first pastor of Hurstpierpoint Hope Strict Baptist Chapel opened in 1876. He was pastor until 1887 when he left to go back to Mayfield. He was a supply minister for a number of years afterwards until he became pastor at Southborough near Tunbridge Wells. He wrote an autobiography which is in the Gospel Standard Library in Hove.
