Hello everybody
Apologies as I have little information and would appreciate ANY help at all.
Looking for Eliza or Jessie (her mother) Helm. Unfortunately do not know father's name.
The family tells us Eliza or her mother came from Aberdeen. Eliza was b abt 1852, later married John OWENS, a Fettler. It is unknown whether she married John here in Australia or back in Scotland.
Eliza was in Australia by 1886 when her first known child Violet Vera Vida Owens was born in Barcaldine, QLD. Migration details unknown.
Any help most gratefully received.
Thank you.

Scotlands People lists the birth of an Eliza Helm at Kirkwall, Orkney on 9 Sep 1852. The 1861 Census of Stenscholl, Inverness has an Eliza Helm aged 9 but I could find no mention of her in the 1871 Census.

There are no Helms in the Aberdeen Area in any of the census records from 1841 to 1901 apart from a Helen M Helm in 1881. She is aged 5 and is listed as 'wife's daughter'born in England, the wife being Annie Smith 29, born in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. Her husband is John Smith 36, Master Watchmaker and Jeweller born in Aberdeen. They have a son Harold E Smith who is 11 months old and they live in 20 Gladstone Place, Aberdeen.
No sign I am afraid of any of your relations.
There are a few Helm Marriages listed between 1855 and 1931 (you can check these for yourself at Scotlandspeople.gov.uk), but no Helm/Owen marriage, so they must have married after they reached Australia.
As there is no trace of the Helms it looks unlikely that Eliza was from Aberdeen. Of course it could have been her mother that was from the area, but without her maiden name it will be hard to trace.
Do you have Eliza's death record? I don't know how accessible Australian records are, or what info they include. We are lucky in that Scottish statutory birth, marriage and death records (after 1855) normally include the parents' names, including maiden names.
Good Luck
Gary

Thanks so much, both of you. It gives me somewhere to start, at least! I will check out that website as well.

From the 1852 Orkney birth record that Bervonian found on IGI, I looked for a marriage of Paul Helm and found one.
5th August 1844 Paul HELM to Isabella MAUDLIN Medomsley, Durham, England
So these would seem logical candidates for parents of that Eliza Helm.
The only Helm marriage on IGI that I could see in Aberdeenshire was William Henry Helm to Annie Brown in 1873.
Is it possible that when they referred to them as coming from Aberdeen it was meant literally? As in they sailed from Aberdeen? Otherwise they could have been born elsewhere but lived there and considered it home.
Do you know the religious denomination of Jessie/Eliza? If they were catholic/ anything other than established church then the records would not be on Scotlands People.

Hi everyone
Thanks for your help. As per my Aussie thread, I have found some more accurate info that may help find out more.
Apparently, the birth date can be altered to abt 1859 as per her age on 3 of her children's birth certificates (new to me).
Also the information on the birth records of her children suggests her birth place is Edinburgh. Perhaps this is simply because that's the place the registrar knew in Scotland, or she really was born there. Maybe the family moved to Aberdeen after her birth.
Her eldest known child was born in 1877 in Australia, and she claims she married in South Australia in 1876 (no record yet found), so she would have left by this point.
I think I have found her death, in 1901 in Queensland. Trying to establish if it really is her, if it is I will be purchasing (at AU$35 with quite a few to buy QLD can be exxy).
A 'married in' researcher of another branch has just told me that in her family records, Eliza appears as 'Elizabeth Cunningham Helm'.
I wonder if this helps or confuses? Fingers crossed there is an Eliza(beth) Cunningham Helm in some records. Maybe she even appears as Cunningham somewhere, although previous search may have looked for that any way.

Thanks Kirsty. That sounds like a good lead, I was hoping I could go further back in Scotland as I have exhausted my leads here in Australia so far.
