I have been told that at the beginning of the 20th Century I had relatives who had emigrated from Kent (possibly) to Utica area of New York who set up their own sweetie business.
Googling it now I cannot find any trace ofthe company but aparently it was very successful.
Does anyone have any ideas how to look for the business now.

It was still around in the 1940s. Have you tried finding a historical society for Utica? Here is a link:

This one has the town historian. Contact him and I am sure he will have a plethora of information for you. I have contacted town historians before and they are usually thrilled to help out.
