Allen/Cryan family from County Sligo
« on: Monday 26 March 07 12:04 UTC (UK) »

Hi there,
Can anyone help me find my family in County Sligo.  I don't know which area in Sligo they came from and the only information I have is that Thomas Allen (labourer) married Anne Cryan about 1855, they had a son William ( my great grandfather) who was born in County Sligo in 1858.  I know that William moved to Scotland and I do have information about that but I am looking for information about his parents, siblings etc in Ireland.

I would be very grateful if anybody knows anything or can help me.
Thanks,          Julie

HI MARY,

THANKS FOR HELPING ME.  IīM SORRY BUT I DON'T KNOW WHERE OR WHEN ANN WAS BORN .  I DON'T HAVE ANY MORE INFORMATION ABOUT HER OR THOMAS.
I GOT THEIR NAMES FROM THEIR SON WILLIAM'S MARRIAGE REGISTER IN SCOTLAND AND MY MOTHER KNEW THEY CAME FROM COUNTY SLIGO BUT THAT WAS ALL SHE KNEW.

REGARDS,  JULIE

Hello Mary,

This lady looks like a possibility as I know William Allen (son) was Roman Catholic.  It would make her 25 years old when she had him and 36 when she had Maria. That makes me think there are probably more children between these dates.

Kind regards,  Julie

Hello Mary,

Where is Aghanagh in County Sligo ?  I have looked at the map but can't find it at all.  I did find Collooney.

Sorry to ask such basic things but I have never been to Ireland.

Thanks and regards,  Julie

Hello Mary,

Thank you so much you have really helped me get started with the family but I am going to be cheeky and ask if you can help me with the other side of the family as I really donīt know where to start looking as I don't have a county for them.  This is the information I have:

Daniel Docherty born about 1806 married to Ann  born about 1808. Her maiden name is Morraw or Morran. Children I know of are Catherine born 1840, Thomas born 1845 and William possibly born 1839.  They moved to Scotland and appear on the 1851,1861 Scottish census but it only gives the birthplace for all of them as Ireland with no further information.  As I can't find them on a Scottish 1841 census I assume they moved from Ireland sometime between 1845 when Thomas was born in Ireland and 1851 when they appear on the Scottish census.  When he was in Scotland Daniel worked as an agricultural labourer.

As I only have Ireland to start with where would you suggest I begin to look for them as I would love to find out where they originated from.

Thanks and kind regards,

Julie

Hi Mary,

I forgot to mention that you were correct with the Anne Cryan you found from Aghanagh.  I investigated her further and found she did marry a Thomas Allen in 1855 so I think it must be her.

Thank you ....I don't think I would have found her myself

Kind regards,

Julie
