Davis family
« on: Monday 26 March 07 18:48 UTC (UK) »

Hi  I wonder if anyone out there has come across Emanuel DAVIS (described as 'A Gypsy' in baptismal record of son Wanslow).  He was b Lewisham 1821ish & seems to have moved around Kent/Sussex/Surrey eventually settling in Reigate.  His wife was Jane HEDGES and she belonged to another family that moved around a lot.  I wonder if they were travellers as well?  Any ideas most welcome

Hi Maggott

I have just started to help a friend with her family tree.  She is a descendant of Emanuel Davis and Jane. Their son Wanslow Davis married Susan Buckee in 1877. I have found the family on the census from 1871 but nothing prior to that. Where did you get the name Jane Hedge from? Have you any more information about the family? My friend is unable to use this site. Her e-mail is email address removed by moderator - please use the secure Rootschat personal message system to exchange personal email addresses - thankyou if you would be kind enough to contact her or leave me a message on this site.

Regards
Liz

Hi  Nice to know there are other people researching the Davis family.  I'm decended from Eden Hedges.  Jane - Mrs Emmanuel Davis - was her sister.  Big family, with Thomas Hedges (who I just can't trace) as their father.
Wanslow was baptised Winslow at Ham, Surrey.  Described as son of 'Manuel Davis a gypsy'  The Davises travelled about Surrey/Sussex/Kent but were settled by the end of the century
Miss Buckee's family came from Scotlandvis Hertfordshire, as I expect you know.  Send me a pm if you'd like more

Personal message - saves cluttering up pages with stuff that's really only of interest to the people involved.

I'm sure I saw Thomas Hedges and Eden together on one of the censuses -

Thanks for that I have details of other children of the Hedges family. Now must try and search 1851 for Eden Hedges.
