Cornish Emigrants to the USA - HICKS or WATKINS or LONG
« on: Monday 26 March 07 21:11 BST (UK) »

I have been led to believe that one of the children of James Henry HICKS and Grace Frances PEARCE emigrated to the States.

Possibilities are:

George b 1875
Beatrice Annie b 1883 and spouse Samuel Olds WATKINS b abt 1881
Frances Jane b 1889 and spouse Cecil LONG
Oliver Pearce b 1896 and spouse Rose NN

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Thanks
Moira

Did some of this family move to the Coventry area?

Oliver P Hicks m. Rose E Turrell there in 1914 (freebmd)
also born there were some Long children with mother's maiden name Hicks:
Hilda G. F. H. Long (mmn Hicks) 1912
Cecil S. M. Long (mmn Hicks) 1914
(A Frances Hicks m. possibly Cecil W Long in 1911 in Conventry)

Incidentally, there's evidence for three Samuel Olds Watkins on freebmd - one born about 1839 d. 1900, one born 1881 m. 1904, and a third b. 1905 - probably the son of Samuel and Beatrice?

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ - there's a Samuel Olds Watkins who recieved a Merchant Seaman's medal in WWII (presumably the one b. 1905), a possible Cecil W Long in the WWI medals, can't find any Oliver Pearce or Oliver P Hicks though.  It's hard to find anything for George because the name George Hicks is so common - do you know where in Cornwall he was born and if he was still in England by 1901?

Thanks for the info JoRose.

I hadn't thought to look further than what I had been told.  Embarrassed

I am not too clued up on English research as you can see!  Thanks for the pointers to the other family members and their children.

Regards
