Looking for that elusive branch!
|
I have had the best success you could wish for on GR, not personally but for a friend of a friend. I only found out in the last few days that he was adopted as a baby. His adoption papers show all the details of his birth parents and siblings but he had no idea if they were still alive. I promised to look on GR for him and bingo! I found his half brother, who had been looking for him for two years! I contacted him and they then spoke on the phone. Must have been a very emotional conversation, they had never known each other. Gave me a warm feeling inside to know that I had helped them find each other. With the help of GR of course!

Best wishes

I agree — it is a really good site for contacting unknown rellies. I have met more cousins on this site than any other. It's a very good concept. Having said that I think quite a few people find it can be really slow and frustrating, and the hot matches are a pain! I think its problem is that it has grown too fast and shot itself in the foot. The software it uses can't keep up with demand and has not accommodated itself fast enough to the needs of it's users. (I also hate the ancestry ads, but that is another topic entirely). I'm really glad that you could help your friend — that must have been so exciting! Cheers, Rian.

I'm still debating whether or not to give GR a whirl. I've seen all the comments on here and I think, Roo, that yours is one of very few complimentary ones! I'll have another look at the site.

"Family ~ link to our past, bridge to our future"

I added my comments to the other thread on this topic.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,213974.0.html
I have found lots of cousins on GR and many of the hot matches have been good for me too.
My one worry is people just copying straight from my tree without checking.
The other worry is more serious ~ relatives putting details of my children, and other relatives who have not given consent, onto their tree and then allowing access to strangers.

Last year I made contact with my husband's cousin's daughter in the USA, sadly his cousin had passed on but we had never met the daughter, in January she came over and we had a family reunion with other cousins we hadn't seen for over 30 years! so sometimes it works! newbie

I too have made contact with a couple of distant relo's but the one I really want won't reply.
He has all my details, my childrens names etc ( taken from a book I did in 1997) and I don't know where he fits in. It's driving me crazy. He could be a new link to the line as the book was distributed to numerous libraries and family history groups. How on earth can I find him now. Margaret

I have made lots of good contacts on GR - I make sure I don't put living relatives on my tree at all unless they have given permission and understand the implication and have the boxes ticked that hide anyone not shown as deceased - that way anyone born within the last 120 years is anonymous. Even when I know dates of death for people born in the 1900s I put them in the notes rather than in the 'right' box so that they remain hidden and I always acknowledge sources.

The price is very right also. I, personally, have never made a contact on GR, but that's because I am the only one researching my family and not GR's fault. I have heard many success stories.

Where are they?
|
I give GR a tentative thumbs up.
I have found first, second and third cousins. Made lots of contacts with numerous persons connected one way or another [usually by marriage]
Like people have said, Hot Matches can be a pain, 99% useless in most cases but that remaining 1% is how I found a first cousin.
It is a site for finding matching individuals and trees if you are lucky.
I dont know what the future will be now it is more 'commercial'

I will find you!!
|
I've had mainly good contacts from GR. Lots of 2nd, 3rd, cousins on my mum's side of the family all connected with me and each other, including one in Canada, they've sent me photos, copies of certificates, probate etc.
Then I made contact with my cousin's granddaughter (on my dad's side of the family) and I hadn't seen or heard from my cousin since about 1962, and also I found a contact who is the ggg granddaughter of my gg grandmother. It is because of this connection that I have been able to find out lots of info regarding my g grandmother and she (the contact) is doing her best to help me find g.grandfather (who is not her relation - she is descended from g.grandmother's first marriage).
