1794 Marriage SUMMERS
« on: Monday 26 March 07 23:17 UTC (UK) »

Hi all, Ive found a marriage of James Summers in Pembury in 1794 on the IGI index. It gives his wife as Elizabeth Summers. Any info on her maiden name or was it Summers. They had a son James in 1897 or 98
                                                             Cheers, Phil

It just shows how easy it is to get tied up, when it comes to dates. Done it many times myself.

I have looked at the entry and I would say that from the way it is written that James Summers married Elizabeth Summers. Where the maiden name was different it would probably have said Mrs Elizabeth Summers. I have seen quite a few entries like that.

Thankyou Fizzy. Could be a family trait as 2 younger generation Summers ( cousins ) also married.

Great info Fizzy, It was indeed Elizabeth Summers already. Ilooked up births for her around 20 years earlier on the IGI, clicked on her name and christening and it came up as spouse James Summers married 1794 in Pembury.

                                                               Well done, Phil Grin

Another puzzle now. James born in abt 1798 married Sarah ? They had a daughter also Sarahin 1835. In 1841 they had a NK Summers.( 1841 census ). On the 1851 census Sarah is only down as 9. Do you think the 1835 Sarah died and they called the NK Summers Sarah

It was common practice where a child died to name the next one of the same sex after it. One of my family had five Mary Anns and they all died.

have just looked at free BMD and it would seem that the baby was registered as FEMALE Summers so it could well have been Sarah.

I would treat that IGI entry with extreme caution.

Record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church

This means that it was submitted by a private individual (like any of us) and it may not be correct especially as there is no full date.  It could just be guesswork as I would expect the full date to be included plus names of the parents if baptisms had been found Undecided

Hi Fizzy and Casalguidi, Do you think if i send for the unknown Summers birth cert it might help if the parents come up as James and Sarah or is this just a shot in the dark

I have just found a link to the 1841 Kent census in Capel and it shows NK Summers as a male aged 1 month. So not Sarah then
