1851/61/71 census look-up, please - Kay - Kildwick/Cononly
« on: Tuesday 27 March 07 13:09 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Joseph Golding Kay was born 1821 in Manchester (according to the 1881 census). He married Rachel Smalley 1844 in the Blackburn district. Their eldest son that I have been able to confirm from the 1881 census is William Golding born 1847. He is recorded as being born in Blackburn. Their eldest daughter, Sarah Jane, is recorded as born 1853 Kildwick.

I would like to confirm other children of Joseph and Rachel who were probably born Kildwick/Cononly 1847 - 1871.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

Best regards

Amanda

Hi Andrew

My connection to the Kays is that William Ewart Kay born 1898, son of Edward Denton Kay born 1855 son of Joseph Golding Kay born 1821 married my great aunt, Ada Brotherton.

I have some information on the Kays that I would be happy to pass onto you but it is only the basics I have obtained from the internet, IGI, Freebmd etc.

If you email me with your email address I would be glad to send you the info.

Best regards
Amanda

Hi Amanda,
I will have a look at the Kildwick parish registers for you and hopefully provide you with some more information.

Also ... the name Smalley, might be a small connection but I will have to go over my paperwork first Roll Eyes

Hi Amanda,
not a great deal to offer I am afraid.
Nothing in the baptisms or the burials.
A couple in the marriages to offer:

Marriages at Kildwick.

- Annie Kay to Robert Moor on the 21/4/1880
- Sarah Jane Kay to Thomas Butler Idle on the 16/6/1874
(note* there was no comma after Butler so I presume his surname was Idle, may need to check census for that one)
- Ellen Kay to Lot Walmsley on the 26/10/1897

Also these that do not appear to be yours but because the name Kay does not show up much in the registers I have included them.
- Hannah Kay to Moses Stansfield on the 2/4/1870
- Mary Kay to Mason Lee Fleming on the 13/9/1870

Re: name Smalley.
The Rachel Smalley you have that married Joseph Golding  Kay appears to have been baptised on the 25th Dec 1825, Kildwick.  Parents: Joseph and Mary Smalley. (IGI)
I think it is this Joseph who remarried to a Drusilla Whitaker, who is linked to my line.  I have a word doc on John Smalley son of Joseph and Mary and would be happy to send to you if you can pm me with your email address.
I have other details but still searching Roll Eyes

Hope some of this helps,
Margaret

Hi,
The Mary Kay you have found married to Mason Lee Fleming is the eldest sister of Edward Denton Kay my Gt Gt Grandfather, as far as I have found they had 4 children,Joseph,Walter,Kate and Robert they lived in Grassington.
I also have William Ewart Kay son of Edward Denton Kay married to Ada Walker having two children Brenda and Irene,  is this  wrong?
Edward Denton Kay and Annie Louise Coe had 16 children my Gt Grandma being the eldest, I have a copy of a photo taken about 1901 after the birth of the twins Walter and Edgar alas Kitty was born in 1902 so is missing. They lived in Carleton Nr Skipton.
Joseph Smalley, father of Rachel had as far as I have found had two other daughters Elizabeth and Jamima.
Joseph's father was called John born c1767.
I hope some of this is of use.

Hi Andrew

Thank you for the info. I am very excited today because the previous message was from my cousin once removed or second cousin, never sure which. Any hoo, a Kay relative. William Ewart actually married Ada Brotherton, my grandfather's sister. I am very much looking forward to making contact with my Kay/Brotherton relation. I believe she is in fact the daughter of Brenda who you mentioned.

Thank you for the info on Edward Denton. It is very much appreciated.

Best regards

I have just come across this thread and am amazed! My husband is the Gt Gt Gt Grandson of Joseph Golding Kay and I have never been able to get further back with the Kay family tree. I have a copy of Joseph's marriage certificate to Rachel Smalley which clearly states Joseph Kay as Joseph's father, but a posting on here has it as George. No wonder I couldn't find him! Where has this information come from and does anyone have any more information about George Kay and the silk industry or the connection between Blackburn and Manchester? My husband's grandmother was Edith Kay who was the daughter of Thomas Edward Kay who was the son of Edward Denton Kay who was the son of Joseph Golding Kay. Edward Denton was ramrod straight and very strict, according to Edith. I also have a copy of the 1901 photo showing Edward Denton with his large family, including the twins, and I have several others. I would love to hear from anyone else connected to this line.
