Jones of St. Martins
« on: Thursday 29 March 07 10:49 BST (UK) »

I have been trying without success to find the family of my great grandmother Annie Jones. Annie was actually born in Wolverhampton but lived for most of her life in Dudleston Heath and in St. Martins where she had relatives.

Annie died in 1949 aged 91 years, and in her obituary her nephew Tom Jones and nieces Alice and Polly, all of St. Martins, were mentioned, as was her niece Mrs E. Baines.

Does anyone have links to these people? If so, I would love to hear from you.

I have PMed Chettyann as the Mrs E Baines might be related to my Roberts family.

Have you any details of her birth, marriage, 19th century censuses, Ann, as she was born circa 1858?

Also, is Jones her married name?

On the 1881 census Annie was still unmarried and living at the White Lion, Whittington as a domestic servant. Source information RG11/2661. In the December quarter of that year she married Henry Chetwood in the district of Ellesmere. The family were living at Criftins on the 1891 census with daughters Sarah Ann, Leah Jane and Selina, but they lived at Ifton Heath for a time after their marriage. I know that Leah Jane was born there. My grandfather Henry John was born a few days after the '91 census was taken.

Hope this helps.

I sent you a possible for 1861, which I'll post again, here:

Walsall Street, Wolverhampton. I see if there are any more likely.

RG9 Piece 1994 Folio 132 Page 17

John Jones, 39, miner, b. Shropshire, Trevalick what should be Treflach
Ann, 37, b. Shropshire, Pontsbury
Ann, 3, b. Staffs, Wolverhampton

It's only a poss but I'll have a look at the 1871 as well. The problem is greater when they move into 'service' It took  ages to find some of my female domestics  Sad

Brilliant! I do think that Annie had a brother by the name of Thomas, so this is probably them. Would still like to know whether they were related to your Roberts family of Chirk

Thanks for all your help Gadget.

If you give me until tomorrow, I might be able to explore the Chirk registers for Thomas's baptism but they could be non-conformists  Sad
Quite a lot of families and single men moved from the Shropshire/Denbighshire borders to the Staffordshire coalfields in the 1840s/50s for work. My very large Stokes family  (originally from St Martins) are a prime example. The sons moved in the 1840s and returned in the late 1850/1860s; some moving to the Normanton area of Yorkshire rather than back 'home'.

I'll e-mail my cousin about the Baines connection.

Regards

Hi Ann

I've checked the Chirk baptisms and there are two in 1825:

20 Feb Thomas JONES to Thomas (waggoner) and Elizabeth

15 May Thomas JONES to John (blacksmith) and Ann

Not sure if either are the Thomas I found but they are the only two in the 1824-26 period. As I said before, they might have been non-conformist which would mean that he might not have been recorded.

i'm still following up the other lead.

So far not much luck with the Mrs E Baines. The Jones names are not very unusual in that part of the world.

Did you get the marriage certificate that you referred to? That will at least give you a definite father's name and occupation.

Self also born in Wolverhampton and this was an unknown address to me.  I checked and it looks to me like Ettingshall Lane.  A pretty major road amidst the coalfields/ironworks area of the Black Country. If you look on the page before it is much clearer there.
