My Great Uncle Christopher Robins emigrated to South Africa in 1894 from St Austell, Cornwall. He sailed to Cape Town on the Hawarden Castle which left Southampton on the 20th October 1894.
My Uncle Lewis (who called himself Gren) told me (when he was alive) that his father then travelled to the Kimberley area (possibly) where he married. He had two sons (Lewis and Charles). Unfortunately his wife died in SA and Christopher returned to Cornwall, when my uncle was twelve, in about 1923.
I somehow need to find the name of his wife and her date of death. Christopher's father was a Tin Miner so I guess his son would have kept to mining.
Any help gratefully received.

Thanks Lynn,
Have just found a marriage of Christopher Robins to Edith McIntyre in St Austell, Cornwall in Sep 1909. Have ordered the cert. Looks like he must have returned home to marry.

The death notice might add the confirmation then that you have the right family although it looks pretty positive.
Cheers Lynn

Lynn,
The marriage certificate shows that he married Edith McIntyre (widow) in St Austell Cornwall on 29 Jul 1909. Her father was Philip Bond (miner) who I have found on the 1881 Census living in St Austell(age 17yrs). He then disappears from St Austell and I can't find a Marriage for him in Cornwall. Nor can I find a birth for his daughter Edith. I'm pretty sure about this as Bond is not a very common name in Cornwall.
My working hypothesis is that Philip Bond emigrated to SA, married had a daughter, Edith who then married a Mcintyre who left her a widow. Christopher Robins then met her and they agreed to marry coming back to St Austell to do so as it was where her Father was born.

Finding a marriage to McIntyre in South Africa is not going to be easy. Assuming they were Church of England you could ask Carol Archibal to look in their records at Wits University. Archibald.C@Library.wits.ac.za Perhaps she might even have Ediths birth. If not CoE that will be a different kettle of fish. There are 800 odd files in the South African archives that have Philip Bond in them.....too many for me to browse for an estate file. Good luck Lynn

Lynn,
Edith and Christopher were certainly married in a CofE Church in St Austell so I will try the person you recommended.
