Hi All,

I need a little help in the right direction as I am not sure where to start!!

I am trying to find a Baptism of "Robert George Hargreaves", who was born in 1871, possibly at Elham. Going by the 1881 census it stated that his birth was in Shorncliff, so I know he was born in Kent.

His parents were Charles and Mary Jane (nee Deverell) Hargreaves. At that time, Charles was in the Military and was stationed at Shorncliffe. The only birth of a HARGREAVES that has been found was a male born in Elham vol 2a page 860.

Is there anyone who might be willing to have a look for the Baptism of Robert George Hargreaves for me? I was also told that one of the nearest churches were St Martin's.
Since I live in Launceston Tasmania I am unable to go  and look for myself.

If anyone can help me.............. please point me in the right direction.

The reason why you may not have found his birth registration in the GRO indexes is because his father was in the military. You would need to check the army birth registrations (which even if they occurred in England) are in the overseas section of the GRO and not indexed on FreeBMD or covered by Ancestry. The images of the index can be found on this website under military records.

Having checked for the other two children's birth registrations from the 1871 census information in the GRO index they too are missing so it looks pretty certain they are in the army index.

Army families did baptise in local churches but where they were stationed in barracks and the barracks had an army chaplain attached if the family were C of E, the baptism was done by the army chaplain.

If the 'male' birth registration in Elham registration district was Robert his full birth registration still may occur in the army index as I have an example of a double entry in both where the birth took place in England.

Following on from Vanda, here is some additional information for you.

Shorncliffe was/is the local Army Camp, Shorncliffe being a district within Folkestone kent.
Elham was the registration District so a person could have lived anywhere within that district, it included Shorncliffe.
The Barracks did have it's own Chapel.

Hougham is a small village between Fokestone and Dover, Kent. However, the Hougham referred to above used to be a district within Dover, nowadays simply reffered to as Western Heights. This also had an Army Barracks.

Valda you have made my day Wink

I found this post and it helped me track down the record of my grandmothers birth

I knew she was born in Kent in 1879 but could never find her birth recorded. I found her in the 1911 beta census as being born in Shorncliffe. That didn't help at first as I couldn't find a district called Shorncliffe

I then stumbled upon this post and found her recorded under militray records

One last thing if I may? Does Cld gds mean Coldstream Guards? If it does it may make my efforts to trace my great grand parents a little easier

Going back to the original posting.
Robert George born at shorncliffe 1871 Rfl Bde ?90 23 is the certificate order reference number. The first number is badly smudged but could possibly be a 6. Hope it helps
