MEARS Family
« on: Sunday 01 April 07 13:13 BST (UK) »

I am currently trying to research our family tree.  With the help of some family members I have traced the Mears family from Midsomer Norton to Mountain Ash and some of the family moved on Llanelli, South Wales around 1910.  Surnames connected to the Mears line I trying to trace are Targett and Whittock.  I am mainly after information on the Mears family.

Hi Brian

That ties in with information I already have. The Mears family I have been tracing seem to come from that area.  Chilcompton, Midsomer Norton, Binegar have all cropped up.

Thanks for looking

Hi bananachip,

Welcome to RootsChat. Sorry I can't be much help with this. I did find some more burial which may be of interest.

Chilcompton St John the Baptist

MEARS Mary Buried 8 Oct 1829 aged 60

also buried in parish are quite a few child deaths in case they mean anything to you

Elizabeth 4 Feb 1811  aged 3 years
Ann 14 Nov 1831 Aged 17 Months
Louisa 18 Feb 1836 aged 4 Years
Sarah Ann 25 Mar 1837 aged 3 years
Thomas Henry 22 Jan 1844 aged 15 Months
Emily 5 Mar 1858 aged 2 Years
Herbert 19 Sep 1860 aged 7 Years

Binegar Holy Trinity

George 4 Apr 1853 aged 10 Years

I see James, with wife Mary and family listed Midsomer Norton in 1841, 1851 we still have James and family and I notice unmarried mother Mary in Binegar with children who I presume is sister. There do not appear to be a lot of Mears about the area. Alas I have had no luck with Francis. Let me know if you need the census entries for James and Mary and families. Clearly the George buried in Binegar is Mary's son. I suspect as James family all list births in Chilcompton in 1851 that these 1830ish burials were his children. We also have a John in 1851 with his family in Chilcompton so those later ones are probably his.

Thanks Brian and Kris for all your help.

Kris - thank you so much for the burial information that is part of the family I am searching.

Francis seems to have disappeared.  He seems to be the one out of all of Robert and Mary's children I can't trace.

As I don't live in England I find it quite hard to access information for Somerset. So thanks for the information you have both provided.

Wonder if you could point me in the right direction.

I have been told that Mary (Robert's daughter) was put into prison for stealing. She apparantly stole some cheese.  I just wondered how I would be able to confirm this.

Hi bananachip,

I would expect SRO will be able to help you. Unfortunately the site appears to be offline so unable to check holdings at the moment.

Hi I have just found some information which says that the children (or step-children) of Robert Mears sometimes used the surname of Green. That might clear up the mystery with Francis. I have been able to confirm this information as being true.  He could of gone by the surname of Green rather than Mears.

That's a pity, it looked like a "Posh" wedding to me.

I will keep it in mind as I haven't looked any further back than Robert.  It could possibly be his sister or cousin.
