MCLAREN from Dowally circa 1730's-1800
« on: Sunday 01 April 07 15:45 BST (UK) »

Hi All

Just wondering if anybody out there is researching the McLaren's from Dowally & possibly Logierait parishes?

I am simply trying to piece together a few of the early families from the Dowally Parish area as,  like numerous communities of this time,  the families of Dowally continually married into one another.   The gene pool was small  Wink

Thus to research one family means having an understanding  of a few more families given the dynamics!  And it is difficult to know who were siblings, parents, cousins...

I am curious as to the families of McLaren in this area and would appreciate anybody sharing their knowledge  Kiss

Thanks all

Hi
You may already have the information if you are quite involved in the research,  but I have a copy of all the memorial inscriptions at Dowally Kirk.
There are 3 spellings "Maclaren,McLaren, MacLaren"

Should you wish any of this information please give me the name(s )and I'll check it out. They are not published alphabetically so I cannot just copy the relevant entry pages and email them to you. Of course, this would breach copyright! :-)

Hi Luv

I have a couple of McLerans from Dowally in the 1700s though later the spelling seems to change to McLaren for some of them.

John McLeran marries Hellen McLeran on 8 April 1752 in Dowally. Their children were John (b1754), Thomas (b1757), James (b1758), Grizall (b1760) and Patrick (b1762).

The McLerans lived at Over Dowally or Upper Dowally when all of these children were born. Hellen is sometimes referred to as Elan.

Our connection is through Grizall who married Andrew Finneck in Dowally on 19 Nov 1785.

I am curious as to whether there were so few families around that a McLeran had to marry another McLeran or whether the clerk just didn't know the maiden name of Hellen? I have noticed another McLeran marriage where both sides are McLeran but I'll need to check my other computer for the details of that one.

(To Scotmaid - would any of these folk be in your memorial inscriptions? I don't have any dates of death.)

Regards
Kath
