1841 census - Stubbs
« on: Monday 02 April 07 16:53 BST (UK) »

This is one of my brickwalls - I thought I'd have another go!  Roll Eyes

I'd really appreciate any help in locating my greatx3 grandfather William Stubbs on the 1841 census.

I'm thinking he's probably been very badly indexed (I've found some corkers!) but he's got to be there somewhere!

He was baptised in Ightfield,Shropshire in 1783, married in Moreton Say,Shropshire in 1802 and widowed there in 1817.

It's possible he remarried but I don't know!  Embarrassed

He died in 1849 in Little Drayton, Shropshire and the death was registered by a Mary Stubbs. This could have been his daughter Mary who could still be unmarried at age 37 as I haven't found a marriage for her - or could possibly be a second wife.

He doesn't seem to have wandered far from this north east corner of Shropshire so you'd think it would be easy to find him on the 1841 census but - no!

Help!   Grin

this is the only one in Moreton Say
Sup reg dist Market Drayton
 Parish Moreton Say Township Longford
HO107-0900 fol 2/5  p3
William Stubes 50 Ag Lab widow Y
Mary                50                      N
Jane                 18                     N

widow is definitely written next to William so Mary could be a Sister perhaps or other rel.

Wow!

His son Joseph Stubbs and family were living in Longford in 1841. I must have missed this - and Stubes isn't that bad an effort for an index of Stubbs!

Thanks so much, Yonderpeasant (great name, by the way!). I think you've found my William - even if he is passing himself off as younger than he really is (should be 57).

Lots of questions to solve now!  Huh

I wonder who this Mary Stubbs (50) is ? Too old to be his daughter and who is Jane?

Thanks so much for your help. Much appreciated.

Could I ask if this Mary Stubbs (50 on the 1841 census) can be found on the 1851 census. I'd like to see where she was born, other than 'not in Shropshire'!

I can't seem to work out who she is - not a new wife, if William is a widower ; not a sister or daughter!  Undecided
