Soldiers discharge to pension papers have been indexed online between 1760-1854
WO 97 Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents Record Summary Title 1760-1854: discharge papers arranged by regiment, but each described at item level. (WO 97/1-1271)
The covering dates for the entire WO97 series is 1760-1913. The remainder of the records are (WO 97/1722-6322).
The documents are arranged in three series by date of discharge to pension: for the period 1760-1872 the documents are arranged alphabetically by name within regiment, including militia to 1854 (WO 97/1-1721); from 1873-1882 the documents are arranged alphabetically under cavalry, artillery, infantry and corps (WO 97/1722-2171); from 1883-1913 there is one alphabetical sequence for the entire army (WO 97/2172-6322).
So if you can get to The National Archives finding a soldier after 1883 is not problematical since it is by alphabetical by surname but still much harder to find between 1854-1883. Obviously more difficult after 1854 if you can't get to Kew. The majority of soldiers of course were not discharged to pension.

Valda

Hi Valda,
I found the index on the site that you mention, for Henry Gander. I do not think that I will be getting to the Archives anytime soon, as I am in Canada. Thanks.

Hello am the descendant of Charles Gander (son of Thomas and Jane nee Washer). If you require details on that line for your records please let me know, be happy to provide info. Also have done some research on the Washers of Chailey.

MEC,
You are not the first that I have met from Charles and Lucy Ann Gander's line. Tell me more, please. I can, probably fill you in on some info, as well.
Mike
Chris,
Thank you for that info. I am in the process of digesting all but, from what I can see, those markers would not be of my DIRECT line. They are, however, from one of the "off-shoots". I will get back to you on the photos and details. Thanks again,
Mike

Chris in 1066 Land,
I noticed that on another thread, you had mentioned that you had a book on Quarter Sessions in Lewes in the early to mid 1800s. Would there, by chance, be any mention of my Gander lot, (i.e. Henry, Charles, George, Richard, William, John, Thomas or Edward) between 1835 and 1841? I do know that Henry and Charles were "transported for life" and I am almost sure that there would be mention of George, as well. These are all sons of Henry and Martha Gander. I also am sure that George was not transported as he is buried about a half a mile from where I sit right now! Thank you, in advance.
Mike (in Niagara).

Hi Mike
Just had a look on the quarter session records and it would appear that there are some 19 entries with Gander as the convict - but surprisingly, there are several Gander victims as well.
Well type them all out and post them later

Chris,
Thank you, I will check that web site. Of the ones listed above, Henry, 19, Lewes, is my GX3 Uncle. While in Hobart, he married a Sarah Smart. His brother, Charles, died shortly after arriving in Hobart in 1841. (They were not transported together). Family lore has it that my GX2 Grandfather, George Gander, was involved in a riot on one of the Lewes streets on or about Guy Fawkes Day. (It seems that I have another reason to "Please remember the 5th of November", lol).
Thanks,
Mike (in Niagara)

Thank you, Chris. That is quite interesting. That whole area seemed to be a hot bed of "outlaw" Ganders, although, only the 4 mentioned in Lewes are mine. The family actually settled in Lewes after 1817. The father came from Cranleigh, Surrey and the mother from Oxfordshire. The four that you show in Lewes are 4 of the eight brothers.
