1901 Census Ladywood, Birmingham
« on: Tuesday 03 April 07 14:32 BST (UK) »

Hi,

I have a question regarding the 1901 census returns for Ladywood, Birmingham. First my reasons for the question.
I have been searching for my ancestors for years now, Slade/Orton. I don't know if I have bad luck or it is common, but the amount of mistakes I have come across. For Lawless its been transcribed as 'Lovelett', for Orton, 'Orbon', for Slade 'Eyears' etc, etc.
So I have to read each and every image in turn when the search is unsuccessful. At least most of its in Birmingham.
In the previous census years I have found Orton in the St Paul area of Ladywood, but in 1901 I have found St Paul, part of it, in district of All Saints.
So to my question, does any one know why the Ladywood districts start a number 8, what happened to 1 to 7. Did they not exists or have they been lost. Is this the reason I cannot find them.
Just a foot note, part of my family was in Deal 1901, and just my bad luck that the whole of the Deal census was lost.
Regards
Jack

Looking /searching on the nationalarchive site.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

It looks as if Orton may be included under aston. Piece Rg13/ 2877.

Any use?

Lady Wood is over the road almost from All Saints. What happened to districts 1-7 I don't know but I'll have a look.
If you've been searching on Ancestry you have to take into account that the censii were transcribed abroad by people who don't understand English names.

It looks as if this is a result of boundary changes.

Jack

Why don't you post the exact address here that you hope to find them at and see if anyone has the CD of 1901 which of course can be searched by address?

I have found people for others in London that way,as I have the CD's there for 1851 and 61.

Good luck

I have solved Jack's problem  Shocked well one of them  Wink

Districts 1-7 Ladywood, have been transcribed under Birmingham Worcestershire !!!

I have also found the Orton family that he needs, transcribed as HORTON.

Dad has died,so it was even more of a challenge as I was looking for a William and only mum,Jane now appears. Phew...........next challenge Mr Slade!

Just incase anyone else has been going nuts trying to locate these pages.

Thank you all for your replies,

Myself and Carol8353 have cracked the code, Ancestry have list Birmingham, Ladywood Districts 1 to 7 under Worcestershire. No reason why this has been done. Ladywood next to central Birmingham was from the humble beginnings Warwickshire and stayed that way until West Midlands was invented, so how they came up with Worcestershire I will never know. Obvious a ruse to keep you searching.

Parts of inner city B'ham came under Worcs. & others under Staffs.Today they are all parts of B'ham. When searching for anyone in B'ham it's best to look in those 3 counties due to the boundary changes that took place as the town grew in population.

..on saying that Carol's 1901 info. puts this family (Sloane St.) in Hockley B'ham so on this occassion it looks like an Ancestry error.
Hope I haven't confused anyone.
