Oakham families Arnsby,Palmer,Medows,Womansley and Smith
« on: Tuesday 03 April 07 18:09 UTC (UK) »

I have several families who married into my family tree who seem to originate around the Oakham area and I am totally at a dead end finding anything about them so if anyone has any info on the following I would love to hear from you.

John Arnsby c1730 husband of Mary Palmer 1728 also Oakham
Mary's paternal grandfather Thomas Palmer c1680 born Oakham and his wife Anne Womansley c1680 also Oakham
William Medows Mary Palmer's maternal grandfather and his wife Elizabeth Smith both Oakham and also around 1680.

Hi Laura

Thanks for your reply, I'm sure one of the 3 Elizabeth's is the right one, I was just seeing if there were any clues as to which of the 3 Elizabeth's is my ancestor, unfortunately the info I have on William and Elizabeth doesn't offer many clues, I've still not much more on this family than from my original post 2 years ago.

WILLIAM MEDOWS  C1680 OAKHAM Leics. ELIZABETH SMITH C1680 OAKHAM Leics. William Medows married Elizabeth 1 Sept 1702 Oakham.  They had 2 children: Elizabeth Meadows   c1703 OAKHAM Mary Meadows C1707 OAKHAM

I don't know if these Oakham burials help you to rule out one of them - probably not as they could be a family hat moved to Oakham.

5   JUL   1670   ELIZABETH   SMITH   DAU   JOHN
28   MAR   1676   ELIZABETH   SMITH   DAU   JOHN

Thos Thomas is a bit out, but he's the nearest one.

15 NOV 1668   THOMAS   PALMER   S/O   THOMAS / ANNE      OAKHAM

Hi Laura

If only this Thomas had been born later he would have fitted perfectly as a child of Thomas Palmer and Anne Womansley

THOMAS PALMER C1680 Seaton, Rutland. From 19C. Transc. Original PR lost.  No B.T.s 1700-07 7 Jul 1702 Uppingham PALMER tho: WOMANSLY Anne Bride of Oakham.

ANNE WOMANSLEY  C1680 Oakham, Rutland. Thomas and Anne had one son: William Palmer C1703 OAKHAM, no other children found so far.

It looks like Elizabeth is a dau of either Francis or Edward with only 2 daughters found so far for William Medows and Elizabeth Smith it would have been so much easier if they had had a son Edward or Francis, unfortunately my ancestors have never made it easy for me and I have noticed there seems to be a lot of gaps in the Oakham registers, my Arnsby family stop at John 1730 whose birth I've never found in Oatland Rutland/Leics area lots of Armsby's and Arnesby's but no John Arnsby 1730.

Thanks once again for your help it is much appreciated.

Hi,

Yes that's the one - are you still looking for some of the names in your original post? I could see if there any other occurrences that may be connected or is this topic now complete?

Hi David

Just checking on Rootschat by chance and found I hadn't received notification of your last replies, flipping MSN not the first time it's happened, so sorry for not replying earlier many thanks for the extra info, I'll give you the rundown of the info I have on this family, you are right about William Medows and Elizabeth Smith that they might not be born in Oakham, it was an assumption (always a bad idea Embarrassed) that as they had married and settled in Oakham they would be likely to be born there.  I'd missed Josias from Mary's sibling.

I've not updated the info taken directly from my tree with your new info yet, this goes as far as Rhoda Arnsby who married John Watchorn, whose dau Elizabeth married George Matthews.
