Yes Paulline, it was me who sent you message on Genes ReUnited to  look at this RootsChat topic.

As to John Samuel Chambers, yes I found a FreeBMD birth index of him in Sept quarter 1867 at Greenwich RD vol 1d page 669, (info just picked out of the bin)

David, you've just passed 2000 posts - well done,

oh dear - I've just looked at the cricket score 110 - 6  - are we hopeless or what

I'm losing it!

I posted over the weekend that I'd done a look up that involved the Henlow Pell family that may have been the one that John deduced had married Samuel Chambers/Finch.  I've now found it - in my own tree!

One of Sarah's younger sisters married in Deptford in 1865, was widowed fairly quickly and then remarried back in Henlow to one of my remote Coopers. In 1861 when living in Deptford she gave her birthplace as Dagenham Essex, although in all other censuses it was Henlow. But it was that that made me think twice about the 1856 Romford marriage. I would get the certificate if you're thinking about following the Pells Pauline, as it seems a bit early as their first child in the 1861 census was aged only 1. Sarah Pell's father was John by the way.

Let me know if you need Pell census details Pauline - they were in Henlow in 1841 and 1851, Deptford in 1861, then back to Beds thereafter

Regards

David

And we managed to scratch a win in the cricket!

There were two Chambers families reproducing in Southill at this time, one of which was headed by William, who was a thatcher. I suspect that William who married in 1742 derives from one of these families but wasn't baptised. I doubt if I shall ever be able to prove it though. Unless of course John comes up with some incredible detail from the Bedford marriage entry on Saturday morning!

Checking with BLARS to see if they hold any wills.

More circumstantial evidence regarding the Pells. In 1861 they were living in Deptford, which we know is where Samuel Finch/Chambers and wife Sarah were living. Included in the Pell family was John aged 6, birthplace Deptford, although in 1871 it was Beds. But the only John Pell birth on FreeBMD that fits is in June 1854 in Romford registration district, which of course is where the assumed marriage of Sarah Pell took place in 1856.

In 1861 John's elder sister Elizabeth age 15 had a birthplace of Dagenham Essex, which I doubt, as in all other censuses it was Henlow. But possibly the enumerator made a mess of writing up the schedule and Dagenham should have been John's birthplace, which would fit very nicely with the FreeBMD entry.

And in 1861 a Marsha Pell age 22 born Harlow (sic) Beds was a servant in Romford. In 1851 in Henlow Beds one of John Pell's daughters was Martha age 12. Martha Pell married Thomas Dicken on 16 Apr 1862 at St Paul, Deptford. QED

Just a thought

Penultimately, as I'm sure John will have something to add!..... the Legate s were not a Langford family, but came from adjoining Henlow. I have a lot of them in my tree, being a Henlow lad, (I used to live next door to one Legate family), and think that Elizabeth Legate was christened on 30 Dec 1744 at Henlow, the youngest of 10 children of Thomas and Jane (Green) Legate (also spelt Levett in Henlow PR)

Hello David/John
I have just received marriage cert for Samuel Chambers and Sarah Pell. They married on 7/9/1856 in Hornchurch Essex which is in the registration district of Romford.
Samuel was a Sawyer and his father was William Chambers, a woodsman. Sarahs father was John Pell and he was a gardener. I've also now managed to get their son John Samuel ( my grt grt grandfather) birth certificate. Registered as Chambers not Finch born 22/5/1867. They lived in Deptford which comes under the district of Greenwich.

Excellent! (whilst I was pretty confident,  it was essential to get confirmation).

And on to the next brick wall! (It's got to be easier than this one to demolish)

Two happy punters on one thread - gotta be good!

Let me know if you need Pell census details

David ... just a query ...
I've just been checking surnames of interest and I noticed you also have Litchfield. I have a Frederick Litchfield, c1870, Southill who married in 1893 in Southill an Ellen Williamson, c1969. I don't suppose they are also in your tree are they? Ellen is my Grandmother's aunt.

Hi Andi

Yes, I have him in my tree (I think I've put all the Southill Litchfields in my database, at least up to c1870) but I didn't have his wife. He was the illegitimate son of Emma Litchfield, who was the sister of my gg grandmother Betsy.

Emma married Benjamin Bryant on 26 Oct 1872 at Southill, and Frederick was shown as Frederick Bryant son 11 in 1881, but in 1891 still living at home he was Frederick Litchfield, 21 son in law (which at that time also meant step son)

If you'd like a full report on the Litchfields just send me a Personal Message with your email address

Inevitably I have a couple of older Southill Williamsons in my tree, but I've done no research on them at all as they were very peripheral (not even a bud on the outermost twig of my tree!)

Regards

Hi David,
Everyone in Southill seems to be related somewhere down the line!!
The Litchfields are not relevent to my tree as they married into it. I was hoping that you may have had something on the Williamsons. I got most of my info from another "tree person", but on checking it there seems to be two similar starting points and I'm trying hard to figure them out!! I'll let you know if I need your dectective services again?! Grin
