Hi there Can anyone tell me if all counties are covered in the 1851 census on SP? I have found my gggreat grandfather and his family in Dundee in the 1841 & 1861 census' but can't seem to find them in 1851. His name was Hugh LYNCH born in Ireland abt 1812 and his wife was Agnes/Nancy also born in Ireland, abt 1814. The children I have found so far are: Mary, born Dundee abt 1836 John, born Dundee abt 1837 Margaret, born Dundee somewhere between 1839 & 1844 Ellen/Helen, born Dundee abt 1846 If anyone can find them or any other children in the 1851 census, I would love to know. Any help greatly appreciated. Annie

Hi Annie,
I have also had this problem with some of mine in Dundee in later censuses where I can't find them in the whole of Scotland. I suspect they may have been out of the country at the time, ie visiting back in Ireland. I think this was pretty common and fairly easy for them to do, however, I may be wrong.
I have a few siblings who were mentioned in the 1851 census then disappear completely from Scotland. As I can't find death certs for them I am assuming they went back to Ireland. I also have one who is missing from one census with his wife then appears in the following census minus wife, who died in the interim. As I can't find a death cert for her perhaps she was ill and returned to Ireland to die?
It may be your relatives were visiting Ireland at the time of the census.
Good luck Lesley

Hi Annie,
The SP 1851 Census Index has the following in Dundee but I only offer it as a possibility and may not be the same family.
Agnes Lynch 36 Mary Lynch 16 John Lynch 14 Margaret Lynch 13
I drew a blank on Ellen/Helen aged about five. If they are all of the same family she may have died, and Hugh may also have died or been working away from home. All rather doubtful, and you'll have to decide whether to expend credits

Hi again Annie.
The way I found children and other siblings of my gggrandfather was by looking at the deaths of the surname in the Dundee area as it shows parents and wife or husband, along with occupations. Ok, I did spend a bit of money on credits at Scotland's People website but it was well worth it as I found 3 sisters and a brother and it was through one sister in the 1871 census that I found which county in Ireland they were from, and from there, and the name of their father and mother, I managed to track the actual village in Ireland, through Griffiths Valuations, and a month ago I even managed to get over there to see where the family were from, so - it's definitely worth looking for other relatives and trying to find them on all the censuses. Although it usually just says 'Ireland' sometimes you get a lucky break, as I did. To stand in the graveyard on the hill in Ireland where my ggggrandfather was buried was very poignant.
Happy hunting. Lesley
