hi my whyte family starts with caroline whyte, who married walter smith in edinburgh in 1878. She was my granpas granny. her dad was hector whyte and her mum was mary mcintosh. Hector was a tailor and a crofter. The family was quite big so for just now, hector,s dad was george whyte and his mum was caroline campbell. I think george was a tailor too. Hector had a blind brother called george who live d with him and a brother called john who was also a tailor and i think lived next door. do any of these names look familliar. They all seemed to have big families but i dont think there were a lot of whytes in durness at that time.

Hello Poppysmum Yes, this is the same family that I have. My line stems from John WHYTE who was the youngest brother in the family. George WHYTE and Caroline CAMPBELL had 8 children (as far as I know.) John was also a tailor, and later on a Farmer and Crofter with 4 acres. He married Christy (Christina) McKAY 24 Feb 1843 in Durness. They had 9 children: Hugh b 17 June 1845; George b 1846; Flora 1849; Caroline 1851; Peter 1853 (my Grandad); Mary McIntosh Whyte b 28 Sept 1855; Alexina b 7 Feb 1858; Lena (Angusina) b 22 April 1860; Charles b 7 May 1865. What is the CD of Durness that you have? Can't wait to hear back. Best wishes, Carol

Hi Poppysmum & Carol, I have read your messages from April and wondered if you can help me? My husband is a Whyte descended from the Durness Whytes and even though I know a bit about them, it's very sketchy. The furthest back we know is that Donald Whyte who was a Crofter and Weaver married Ann Ross in Durness in 1808. She was daughter of Donald Ross and Mary MacKay and born in 1787. I have found a record of Donald Ross b.1750 Balnaceil, Durness, marrying Mary Mackay b.1762 Clashneach and hope this is the same couple. (they married 3rd July 1778, in Durness). Donald and Ann's son Donald Ross Whyte was a Salmon boiler / Cooper, who married Ann Pittendreigh (sp) and their son John b. Helmsdale 1841 who was an Ironworker who moved south to England and brought his family up in Croydon, Surrey. He was my husband's Great grandfather. Do any of they names mean anything and I wonder if you know anything else about this family? I gather it was a tight knit community so presumably there must be some family connection, hope so anyway!! Kate Whyte.

Hi poppysmum, Just to let you know that Carol has sent me 7 generations of her Whyte family tree and we (my husband's family) are linked several generations back. So I've found that very exciting!! I see you also have Whyte's.
Kate Whyte
