Could SKS assist with a look up for Mary (Ann) Smith, age +- 25 years, who was in the House of Correction, York, 1861 census.

Sorry Sue, unfortunately not. I was given to understand it was in the York area!!!
Also on the census somewhere in York is a James? Smith with a four year old son Joseph, these two facts - Mary in the house of Correction and a "single parent" father Smith with a four year old named Joseph, may put me on the track of my g-grandmother who in 1901 gives her birthplace as a "non-existent" Ogleven or Egleven near York!
Prior to that she always gave her birthplace as Guisborough but she is not to be found prior to 1863. I was hoping the 1861 census would enlighten where this Mary in the House of Correction was born.

Aged 28 - Wife of James Smith Labourer - born in Selby.
I can't see any obvious candidates for James or Joseph though.

I notice you have Hindson on your research list. My husband's g-grandmother was a Mary Hindson, daughter of George and Mary Hindson - George a shoemaker. However, they were from North Yorkshire, not Durham. Is this of any interest to you?

Most of my Hindson's are Durham and I haven't much source/confirmation/documentation on this line, but I do have a link with the 'top bit' of Yorkshire (/Cleveland).
I have a James Hindson born 1836 in Sunderland. From census and IGI extracted records his father is James Atkinson Hindson born 1810 in Marske in Cleveland. James senior is the illegitimate child of Jane Hindson. I did wonder whether the Atkinson middle name came from the father - but there is a Jane Hindson with father Joseph Hindson christened 1785 near Marske in Guisbrough and also a marriage between a Joseph Hindson and Elizabeth Atkinson in 1780 Guisbrough... a bit of a leap I know... 
I did wander along this possible branch for a while and I think that Joseph and Elizabeth had a son George (christened 1794 from IGI) and he may be the George (shoemaker) in Carlton in 1841 with wife Mary & children Joseph, William, Mary and Sarah. Is that your George???
As I say - I am pretty much adopting the Guisbrough Hindson's with little reason except a wild hunch, but if that is the George you have then there could be a link even if only in my overactive imagination!!
I'd love to hear more about your Hindson's - even if it is just to confirm I have gone a bit mad with the guesswork

Thanks for your message. I'm afraid I haven't done any Hindson research for a while - and to my shame I think I still owe Sarahjane412 some correspondence from 2007 
The Hindson family I have are my huband's family:
Joseph Hindson married Elizabeth. Joseph was a shoemaker.
George Hindson son of Joseph 1 December 1794 Guisborough married Mary. Mary born ca1798 Great Ayton (1851 census). George a shoemaker.
Mary Hindson daughter of George born ca1837 Carlton (1851 census), died 24 October 1914 aged 79 years. Married 6 September 1857 Faceby, William Garbutt. Mary working as a servant to a Weatherill family in Stokesley 1851 census age 14.
Mary is my husband's great grandmother.
Sarah Hindson daughter of George born ca 1839 Carlton (1851 census)
Sarahjane412 sent me a lot of data on her Hindson family and I believe we connect somewhere, however, we unexpectedly moved house in 2008 and I'm not sure where her data is at present. Likewise I do have numerous parish entries, again things were packed in the move and no further research was done.
I believe there is a connection to Marske, but most of the research I did connects to the Guisborough area
Does any of the above fit with what you have?

Hi not sure but certainly we (they) lived at some point in Marske. On Oct 5th I am planning on looking at the county records in Northallerton re. parish records.
Where are you.
It is NOT a common name so perhaps we are related

Where am I now?? In South Africa!
Originally from Redcar (North Yorks) Both my husband and my families have been traced way back to the mid 1500s in Yorkshire. Not the Hindsons though.
The connection to Marske is one that Sarahjane412 sent me:
James Atkinson Hindson 29 August 1810 Marske.
Jane Hindson baptised 21 May 1785 Guisborough, was the mother of James.
Jane Hindson was the daughter of Joseph Hindson and Elizabeth Atkinson.
My husband's great grandfather George, and Jane would be brother and sister I think.
Also I think James Atkinson Hindson was the one who established the County Durham Hindsons to which Sarahjane412 belongs.

Does Northallerton have Parish records? Long time since I was there.
How far are you from Middlesbrough?
Middlesbrough Archive has Parish records which will take you back to the 1660s. My husband and I made notes on some marriages / births / deaths from Parish registers.
I could try and send you these in a PM.
May I suggest (if you haven't already done so) start a new thread for Hindson as it's unlikely to be picked up (although you did!) from the heading of this one.

I am in Huddersfield - West Riding, born 1959 Saltburn, lived Redcar 1960-1980 then Leeds, Walsall, Huddersfield
Will make a new thread later, if I know how to!
Northallerton said they have parish records for east of Boro (Eston...I think, Marske Redcar, Guisborough etc)
Worth noting if I am right, the parishes are predominantly protestant and I guess since the 16th Cent most of us are Ps but Bertie on my side converted to RC to marry Catherine, so I am of the old old denomination which we all were. Very few RC churches in the 19th Cent as the state refused to allow churches
