I've found my 4 x g grandmother in the 1841 census, she is 60 & a widow there are children ranging from 30 down to 3 months living with her. Do I assume that all but the oldest are her grandchildren? The eldest daughter is 30 but is still listed as Danks so if they are her children are they illegitimate or did they just not bother taking her married name?
If you want to look the family is Danks, ( she is Mercy Danks) in 1841 Borough of Much Wenlock, Parish of Madeley.
Thank you!

I've just had a look at the image and at first wondered whether Elizabeth could be her daughter in law, but in 1851 Francis and Edward aged 29 and 22 respectively are listed as being Mercy's sons?

Peter is also with them in 1851 but I'm afraid I can't read the relationship?

The plot thickens because the last person onthere is Mercy Smith listed as servant (I think) in actual fact it is her granddaughter! So heavens knows what was going on there. I'm really pleased though as I've been unable to track down Mercy Smith in very few censuses so that's great! Will try & track down Peter later although presumably Mercy will be dead by 1861!

Hi again NicoC
In 1861 Mercy was still alive, aged 80!
RG9/1858, folio 57, page 39

You may already have this.
Listed in the same household in 1841 is John, Mercy and Francis Evans.
Mercy Danks married John Evans, 20 October 1838, Madeley, Salop.
I would think Mercy was her daughter.
