AVON Family - Waterford 1880's / 1890's?
« on: Sunday 08 April 07 00:17 UTC (UK) »

Desperately trying to find any information pertaining to the AVON Family connected with the Coastguard in Waterford, Ireland.

My elderly father-in-law is at a point in his life where is is trying to get some informantion on his family after he was placed in any orphanage in the 1920's. His mother Mary AVON (HUSSEY) died in Cobh on Christmas Day 1922? His father Joseph was incapable of looking after him due to head wounds suffered whilst serving with the Dublin Fusiliers in WW1. They had married in England around 1915 and returned to Cobh, Ireland during or shortly after the war.

Inquiries a number of years back revealed Joseph AVON was born in Waterford, Ireland sometime after 1880 to 1890's. His parents were George (Coastguard) and Catherine AVON (Nee McCarthy). Little else is known.   It is possible the family was in Dorset England for the 1881 Census? (IGI) Any information, even the slightsest, on the AVON's - George, Catherine or Joseph (BDM, Census etc) would be very much appreciated by my father-in-law and hopefully give him a little closure.

Many thanks from Australia - Sturdy

Found 2 children for George Avon & Catherine McCarthy:
1. Maria Avon born 4 Nov.1870 Bristol, Glouc., Eng.
2. Catherine born 7 July 1875 Co. Cork, Ireland.

The information for Maria is extracted from a baptism record (parents names in Latin form) and detail for Catherine from a birth record. If you look them up on www.familysearch.org (do advanced search just putting in names of parents and no other details) there are more details.

Have you tried finding Coastguard records?

Will do a bit more searching later and let you know if I find anything else.

Dear Heywood and aghadowey thank you both very much for the information you have provided me.

This will be all new information to my father-in-law and a bit of a surprise that he had so many Aunties / Uncles he never knew about.
