Hi- John King was born about 1820 in Monquitther, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. I know this from census records. He was my husband's g-g-grandfather. He married Elizabeth Keith of Old Deer on 3 April 1849. They had 8 children:Margaret (1849), William (1850), Isabella (1852), Elizabeth (1854), Anne (1856), James (1858), Mary (1860) and Agnes Galbraith (1862). John worked as a farm laborer in and around Old and New Deer, eventually moving to Aberdeen(sometime between 1871 and 1878). He died in West Peterculter in 1908. I cannot find birth records for John, in or around Monquitther about 1820. On his death certificate, only a mother is listed, Mary King. The fact that I can't find birth records for him and that only a mother, with the same last name as he,on his death records, leads me to the conclusion that he was illegitimate. Which leads me in my search to Kirk Session records for Monquitther. How do I access these Kirk Session records? Do I have to go to Scotland? Are they digitalized somewhere? If not digitalized, are they published? Are they indexed? Can someone provide me with suggestions on accessing Kirk Session records? Jeanne
My understanding is that the majority of old Kirk Session records are held by the National Archives of Scotland. However a search on their site www.nas.gov.uk does not return any Session records for Monquhitter. This is not unusual as Kirk Session records are by no means complete for all parishes or for all years.
Although it is unlikely that the historical records are still held at the church, it might be worth an enquiry to Monquhitter church to see if records from the 1820s do exist and if so, where they may be held.
I fear this may turn out to be a bit of a dead end in your researches though!
