Does anyone have an interest in the name Dotterill?
John Dotterill, b.c.1776, was my hubby's 4xG-Grandfather. He married a Jane Gosden in 1797 in Alverstoke. Can't seem to find anything earlier on him.
The first child I can find for these two was William b.1806, and then John b.1809.
Any ideas?

Hi Stoney,
Young William died in 1807, buried St Thomas, Portsmouth.
The spelling variants abound, but there seem to be very few who make it to Portsmouth/Alverstoke. An Ann Dotterell died in Portsea in 1786. Catherington, Blendworth and Bedhampton might be areas for you to check. Have you done a catalogue search at the Hampshire Record Office site:
http://calm.hants.gov.uk/DServeA/
Try all the variations you can think of - I got 9 hits for Dotterill but didn't try the others. It may give you some pointers.

Moogriff - we must be on the same wavelength - my husband's Gx3 Grandparents were John Dotterill and Harriet Hall Phillips!
Their daughter, Jane (b.1839), married Charles Troman Cooke - their grandaughter is my mother-in-law.
As far as I have been able to determine, John and Harriet had 8 children, all in the Gosprt/Alverstoke areas (all christened there).
The earliest Dotterill connection I have is John marrying Jane GOSDEN, 26/07/1796 , Alverstoke.
Have found an old email regarding earlier Dotterill's - will PM you, shortly!

Hi
John Dotterill was appointed as overseer for the Parish of Alverstoke during the week, Monday April 16th, 1832, along with George Legg, George Parker and John Coward.
In the same year, a Mr. J Dotterill was at the Black Bear, North Cross-street, in Gosport, as an agent for selling a particular kind of brandy.
On June 8th, 1835, an advert appeared in Hampshire Telegraph, where the same J. Dotterill put same pub up for let.
That same Mr. J Dotterill had a brewery at his pub, he brewed his own, the whole lot was up for sale on 23rd September 1835.
By 1841, the same John Dotterill owns three summer houses and is at the Vine, near Gosport. He is the complainant in a case of damage
On the 23rd December, 1847, a Mr. Dotterill was at the Star and Garter in North Street, when his wife died leaving a large family to lament her loss.
In April, 1850 a Mr. John Dotterill was a builder in Gosport who tendered successfully to repair Naval buildings in the area, and in 1853 it was renewed. In that year, John Dotterill, builder of Gosport was advertising for a locksmith to work at his builders. In december of that year, John Dotterill had a theft of lead, all 19lbs of it, from his premises-the thieves were sentenced at Winchester.
In October, 1852 a John Dotterill had a builder's yard in Portsmouth Dockyard-there was a dispute with the Parish officers of Portsea over the poor rate.
Are you also interested in the Dotterill family of Horndean-one another was a brick maker whose son John died from "disease of his heart" whilst sitting in his chair during the week June 9th, 1855. There is also a BMD announcement during week Ma6 1839, at Pannell or Padwell, or Padnell, I see there was a brickyard there, near Horndean, a Mr. Dotterill died.
In Gosport after 1855 June 9th an advert from J. Dotterill & Co of Brockhurst Brewery appears, beer at 1shilling, 1s. 6d a gallon!
Just a few items from the local newspaper.

Tom piper (et al) -
Thanks for all this! Will have a good look through it all later, but have held off doing the Family Tree for a while due to "brickwalls" and other projects!
Thanks for your interest and all the hard work, though!
(I find genealogy is a bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle - there comes a point when you don't seem to make any progress and you walk away from it. Then, one day, you wander past and find a bit that fits and before you know it you're immersed in it again! )
