Hello Poppysmum
I can get the inscriptions for Durness Burial Grounds, if you wish.  Also if you join the countysutherland.co.uk group and pay £5 you become a lifetime member and get access to all the Burial Grounds in Sutherland.  Has really been very helpful for me.

Hello again.  Yes there are quite a few Whytes buried there including your Hector who is buried with his father George who died 24 August 1848 aged 82.  Hectors wife Mary McIntosh died 4th January 1853 aged 39 years and is buried with her son Donald who died 22 Nov 1903 aged 61 years. Hectors twin sister Ann is buried there with her husband William CAMPBELL and sons Donald and David. Another son William died in America.
Please give me some names to look up and I will see what else I can find for you.
Regards

Hello Caroline
I never had the deaths for Georgina or Christina. I also don't know anything about John b 1844 and baptised 27 May 1844.
I have 2 brothers both named George (one baptised 5 Jan 1802 and George Mackay WHYTE baptised 23 Jan 1799.  In the 1861 Scottish Census it shows a George (aged 60)  living with his brother Hector at Durine No 23, Durness. No occupation given. In the 1851 Census George is also living with his brother and gives occupation as Pauper.
I am very interested in the cd rom you have.

Caroline- can you look for a male Sutherland and female McKay possibly Angus and Barbara who were born about 1870's or 80's and died after 1812 and before 1830. They are husband and wife so are hopefully together. Let me know if this is too vague.
Thanks Emily

Hello Emily
I have found an Angus Sutherland who died 7 Nov 1827 aged 45 years. His spouse Barbara Sutherland died 20 April 1872 (cannot read the age.) Also on the headstone is Grandson Kenneth F Sutherland who died 1862 aged 10 years and their great Grandson Andrew Mackay died 1900 aged 7 months.  Stone erected by their son Robert.  Hope this helps.
Kind regards
Carol

Hi Carol,

I have just found out about the shipwreck of the barque Canton off Cape Wrath 22 Aug 1847 when all hands were lost and the bodies recovered were buried at Durness according to newspaper reports.

Is it possible to find any monumental inscription details of Asher PREDGEN b.1808 Hull who was 1st officer on the barque?

Thank you for looking,
Barbara

Hi Carol,

Maybe when they buried them they didn't yet know their names, and perhaps there is no MI for the crew and passengers of the ship.

The newspaper report said:
" As decently as possible the bodies were collected and conveyed to Durness, and on the following day they were interred in the parish churchyard"

Thanks so much for looking.

Barbara
