Carland, Co Tyrone
« on: Monday 09 April 07 12:01 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,
Trying a different method to open the gate,  been trying for a long time to find any information re John Seeton/Seeton b 15/03/1857 somewhere in NI.   He's supposed to have told his youngest daughter he was from Mullingore/Mullingar Carland, Dungannon Co Tyrone.   Parents, George Seeton and Mary Gribble, siblings, George (went to America) Robert (went to UK) a sister? Jane stayed in Ireland?  allegedly parents died c1919 aged about 92.   The photo was taken in Australia in 1903 very close to when John's  wife died, leaving him his 3 daughters.   Does this man look like someone in your family tree?

Abygail

Carland is a village / clachan / cluster of houses north of Dungannon, but the name Carland is not an administrative area.  Carland falls at least partly in the townland of Gortnaglush, civil parish of Donaghmore.

There is a presbyterian church in Carland.

In the civil parish of Donaghmore there is a townland called Mullaghmore, but not I'm afraid one called Mullingore/Mullingar.  In fact there is not in the whole of County Tyrone a townland beginning "Mulling".

Hope this helps

Hi,

Why don't you try this website to look up in the Death Indexes? www.familyulster.com

Do not worry about the word "Ulster" in its name as they do have an access to the whole Ireland GRO indexes up to 1922 (the year when they divided Ireland into two parts).

Only one pound per year to look up in!

Hope this help you a bit!

Kind regards,

Hi again,

You may get lucky if you managed to find your John's parents' marriage provided that they got married between 1845 to his birth!

Kind regards,

Thanks everyone, I just love all that positive feedback,  Smiley I know I have an uphill struggle to find anything much on any of the Irish from the 19th Century.    Have always had doubts re my Nana's documentation of origin details.   Sometimes wonder if John actually knew where he was from.  Lips Sealed   Also planning to visit Ireland in September, suggestions / recommendations on places I should visit to further my search will be appreciated. Cool Huh

Hi Mossy,
Thanks for the post, I hadn't seen either lot of records so they are new to me.   I don't know how many George Seaton's there were at the time so it is debatable if we have a match.   My GGF was born in 1857, and his mother was, according to his marriage certificate, Mary GRIBBLE so Mary CAULTON may be his sister in law as he had a brother called George as well, who immigrated to America. (and I am yet to trace him as well).   Anything new is welcome I can easily determine its relevance / credibility.    Are you in Ireland? as I plan to spend a week there in September so suggestions on places to do research will be most welcome.
