...  Regarding the other query about changing your username I was told by Sarah this wasn't possible .. .. you can definitely only change your posting name .. ..  Sad  ...

Pels, to be precise, you can't change your username yourself - but, as I said above, I have no doubt that the "bosses" can change usernames if they choose to.  I didn't bother to make such a request myself - it wasn't important and why hassle such busy people who do so much for us all.

But I can quote - chapter and verse - from my own experience, the cases of two RC members who changed their posting names but whose usernames remained unchanged for a while HOWEVER their initial usernames were subsequently changed to be the same as their new posting names.  Yes, chaps (both are male), if you happen to read this you will know who you are.  Perhaps there are other examples.

JAP is right, apart from two minor points:   Smiley Smiley

a) not "bosses", but Boss - only Trystan can do this.
b) not "if they choose to" but if you request it

go to your profile
click on Membership Related Settings
you will see:
- Username: this is the username you logon to RootsChat with.
- Name: this is the name people see in your profile, your "forum name"

You can change this name if you want to -  no problems ! - but you still have to login with your username .... and PMs and the Chatroom will also still show the username. To change that one you have to send Trystan a PM and ask him to do it.

Ooops, one problem with your forum name - if you do change it, and you have already made entries in the Surname Interests Table, then send me a PM as I will have to change that to your new name. Not a big problem, but until it's done, you won't be able to access your names !

Bob

ps. When you change your name, don't forget to enter your current password, and click on "change profile".  You may then need to log out of RootsChat and then log in again.

Bob

pps.  Trystan is very busy at the moment so don't get worried if it takes a while before you get a reply.

Hello Bob,

Thank you very much for that answer.

I knew that usernames could and had been changed.  I'm sorry if my choice of words was inappropriate - all I meant by 'if they choose to' was 'if they are prepared to spend time doing so'; and 'bosses' was just a catch-all word for whoever is in charge of such things.  I hadn't realized that it was simply a matter of asking Trystan and he would make the change.

Of course, had I used the excellent RootsChat search facility and searched for 'username', I would have found this out.

It would have led me to your post 'How to use RootsChat/ FAQs' (of course I hadn't thought to do anything sensible like look for FAQs i.e. read the instructions  Embarrassed )  Near the start I would have seen the topic "Changing username" with a link to
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,81256.0.html
which contains the very helpful advice you have quoted above.

And I would also have found a thread at:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,34483.0.html
where Trystan offered to change someone's username.

And another thread at:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,186806.0.html
where Gadget said "You can't change your username as such without asking Trystan. You can add a name that will appear instead of your user name.'

Etc ...

I just hope that Trystan doesn't get inundated with requests for username changes.  And I won't ask for mine to be changed  Cool

All the best,

JAP

I know this topic is now two months old,but i read a long time ago. That if you really want or have to, change your user name (i know of one who did) you have to sign in again as a new member.A new user name is a bit confusing starting with no posts and no stars again, but you do get used to the new name. Plus a lot wont know it has been changed unless they post each other often.

Celia - you are quite right about this!  Undecided

I'm sure that in the past one or two people have been successful in changing their user names.

Unfortunately I wasn't one of them .. .. I certainly can't complain because one of the administrators was very understanding, helpful and gave up a lot of her time to advise me, but I'm not sure it's as straight forward as we are led to believe?

On reflection - no doubt the more popular RootsChat becomes it would be nigh on impossible to keep track of 44,000 people who all decide they've made a mistake!

Hi Pels, Hi Celia,

that's new to me.  I always thought that you can change your profile name at any time,
and Trystan can change your username to suit.

Hi All,

As the actual information tends to get lost within the various replies, I've now rewritten the "how to .." bit as a seperate topic.

You can find it in
Topic: RootsChat Topics: How to use RootsChat / FAQs
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,207046.0.html
under
Topic: Changing your RootsChat name(s)

Hope this helps,  Smiley
