Fordington -- Esther CREECH --- Anchor Inn
« on: Tuesday 10 April 07 14:58 BST (UK) »

My G G grandmother , Esther Creech, married William Hill in1830 at Fordington, Dorset ( IGI ).  IGI also gives the christening of Esther on 27 Jan 1805 at All Saints, Dorchester, her parents being Robert and Esther.  Also on IGI, Robert Creech married Esther Case 9 Sept 1799 at All Saints. I have found the family in 1841 and later Censuses.
On Rootschat ( and what a brilliant site this is) I find an entry in Pigot's 1830 with Esther Creech at The Anchor Tavern in North Street, Dorchester.  I imagine this is the elder Esther, but there is no mention of Robert.  Also on Rootschat there is recorded the Burial of a Robert Creech at All Saints on Oct 9 1828, but age is given as 40.  This Robert would have been 11 at the 1799 marriage mentioned above. A date of 1828 fits with Robert not being mentioned in 1830, so----
Question 1   ---could this be a transcription error --- or are there other Roberts I have not yet found ?
Question 2  --- does the Anchor Tavern still exist?  Where was /is it?
I would be most grateful for any help on this

MalcolmH,

Have you had a look at www.dorset-opc.com? Fordington has a new opc and there is a variety of info available.

Thanks for the replies, it is appreciated.
Allibaker---I am uncertain whether the IGI entries were submitted and I do realise this may call into question their accuracy.  Thanks for reminding me, I will check.  I'm afraid I do not know what "BIVRI Vol 2" stands for-- perhaps you could let me know.
Chloed---- Thanks for the confirmation of the baptism and marriage and the fact that William was a "groom"--in two senses I guess!  This may explain the fact that he moved around quite a bit if he stayed with a well-off employer; his children were born in Ireland and Scotland before he eventually moved to Nottinghamshire, where he originated  -- and where his grandaughter, my grandmother, was born.
Nannyjan --- thanks for the referral to Dorset OPC, but that is where I got some of my info.  It is an absolutely brilliant site and as I live in the NE of England very useful for me.
Thank you all once again

Malcolm
AccesstoArchives has a reference to an apprenticeship of Robert Creech (son of Robert of All Saints, fishmonger) to a collar and harness maker.  This was in Sep 1793 in Dorchester.  No age is given on the reference but the original might.  (But if he was apprenticed in 1793 then he probably would have been old enough to marry by 1799?)
