Can anyone help me with information about the the family (husband or children?) of Theodosia FROOM from Wilton?
Here she is in the 1841 Census:
Theodosia Froom 60 ind not born in county William Young 25 superintendent of police not born in county Louisa Loxley 55 f/s not born in county Thomas Abrahams 15 m/s born in county The Square Wilton Wilts HO107 1167/15 fol 22 p 14
The above William YOUNG (whose middle name was Wadham) subsequently married someone named Mary and they had at least five children including an Edward Frome YOUNG. I am therefore inclined to the view that maybe his wife was Mary FROME or FROOM, but I haven't found any evidence yet.
Can anyone confirm or refute this marriage, probably in Wiltshire, and can they identify where Theodosia FROOM came from, and where she went to?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Philip Candy

The eldest child on the 1851 census was Frederick William aged 5 born Salisbury.
Births Sep 1845 Young Frederick William Alderbury 8 236
Marriage Sept quarter 1844 Alderbury volume 8 page 385 William Wadham Young
Not a well covered quarter on FreeBMD. Only name at that reference so far
Marriages Sep 1844 ANDREWS Mary Alderbury 8 385
No Froom, Frome or Froome entry cross references on the GRO index.

These are both wonderful bits of detective work; thank you.
I was beginning to think I'd never find the marriage for William Young, so now the search is on for his wife. It may well be the Mary Andrews that appears on the same page above.
Finding Theodosia's burial is also a great plus, although it's a pity she didn't hang on until after the 1851 Census! It is almost certainly her mother, also named Theodosia, who died in 1830. The other thread, referred to above, shows that Theodosia's husband was Thomas FROME, so now I have a good linkage to William Wadham YOUNG through his mother's family.
I really appreciate your wonderful help with this tricky enquiry.
Best wishes

From Heywood's information the two Fro(o)mes on the 1851 census Dorothy and Susan were in Littleham Devon on the 1841 census. Theodosia Mills was with her husband William in Greenwich. He was something to do with the East India Company. That makes trying to find a Jane Young on the 1841 census much more tricky without the more distinctive names in the household.
Dorothy Frome also left a PCC will
Will of Dorothy Frome, Spinster of Southampton , Hampshire 07 April 1856 PROB 11/2230
Pallots marriage index verifys the 1810 marriage Jane Froome John Young 1810 Salisbury Cathedral
and also gives
Eliza Froome Rev,Benjn Churchill 1809 Salisbury Cathedral
There is also a Theodosia Frome aged 40 on the Guernsey census - not born Guernsey - so they get about a bit.

Hi Valda
Following last night's discovery that John YOUNG was a captain in the 76th Regiment when he married, and indeed that the Bondsman was Rev Benjamin Churchill (Adminstration WIL Source DLB Date 1810 Mar 19 Groom John YOUNG aged 35 occupation captain residing at –, – status bac notes 76 Regt of Foot Bride Jane FROME aged 25 residing at Salisbury Close, WIL status sp notes – Bondsmen CHURCHILL Benj, clerk,Queen's Coll,Oxford), I spent some time this morning looking at the London Gazette, and found the following:
34th Regiment of Foot, Lieutenant John Young, from the 8th Light Dragoons, to be Captain of a Company, by Purchase, vice Bull, resigned. (London Gazette Issue 15943 published on the 5 August 1806. Page 3 of 32)
76th Ditto [i.e, Regiment of Foot]. To be Captains of Companies, Lieutenant Edward Marston, without Purchase, vice Jacobs, promoted in the 30th Foot. Lieutenant John Munro Sinclair, without Purchase. Lieutenant and Adjutant A. Fraser, vice Swetnam, deceased. Lieutenant George Edward Pratt Barlow, from the 8th Light Dragoons, by Purchase, vice Sinclair, who retires. Captain John Young, from the 34th Foot, vice Barlow, who exchanges. (London Gazette Issue 15948 published on the 23 August 1806. Page 2 of 12)
STAFF Major Charles Broke, from the 5th: Foot, to be Permanent Adjutant Quarter-Master-General, vice Bathurst, who exchanges. Captain John Young, from the 76th Foot, to be Staff. Captain at the Army Depot in the Isle of Wight, vice Armstrong, who exchanges. (London Gazette Issue 16455 published on the 12 February 1811. Page 12 of 28)
So it appears that John YOUNG was born about 1775, that he joined the 8th Dragoons, was promoted to Captain in the 34th Regiment of Foot in 1806, and shortly after, he moved to the 76th Regiment of Foot. In 1811, the year after his marriage, he moved to the Isle of Wight with the Army.
I have also found a will for a Captain John Young on half pay who died in Southampton in 1823, so it may be that Jane was widowed for a long time.
But she should be somewhere in the 1841 census.
I really appreciate your help with all this; it's amazing how the story is coming together.
Best wishes

Hi Valda
Many thanks for this. Interestingly, in the 1851 Census, there is a niece in the household of William Wadham YOUNG named Theodosia Jane MILLS, born in France. I couldn't previously read the place, but now I see it says Honfleur! So presumably her mother (Theodosia MILLS nee FROME) was visiting her Aunt (Eliza CHURCHILL nee FROME) and that's why she was born in France!
I also wanted to tell you that ANDREWS is looking like the name of William YOUNG's wife in 1844. His father (John YOUNG) left a will in which he nominated his cousin Dr William ANDREWS of Salisbury, Wiltshire as a Trustee and Executor. So it looks probable that there is a family connection there as well.
Kind regards and thanks for all your help.
