Hi All,
I'm following a possible lead from my Aitkens in Kirknewton...

Thomas Aitken is the son of George Aitken who according to the 1841 census was not born in Midlothian but was born in another scottish county.
I have been trying to track down where George came from for some time now and stumbled across this in the Kirknewton OPR...
26/03/1790 - This day James Aitken farmer in Listonshields son of Thomas Aitken parish of Newlands there of Peebles and Margaret Brown his spouse had a son baptised named Thomas witnesses: Thos Bell & Alexr Aitken
I've noticed a similar naming of children in the Listonshields household to my Thomas Aitken's family in Pathhead.
So looking at Aitken in Newlands there is a George Aitken born 14/4/1782 to Thomas Aitken (spouse unknown). This all fits with the naming pattern.
Does anyone have a knowledge of the Newland Aitkens or are you connected?

Hi i am new to this site so i am not sure what i am doing yet. I have Aitkens from south Leith...is that anywhere near Newlands?? Looked for newlands on the map but could not find!

Newlands is in Peebleshire http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/PEE/Newlands/
So not far from Edinburgh but away in the sticks.
Who are your Aitkens? I have a branch of my Aitkens in Duddingston - not far from South Leith.
If you look on my website (in the signature below) and look fro Thomas Aitken in the surnames he was a miller at Duddingston Mills.

Richard Aitken born c1710 married Eupham Griton
Children:-
Christian or Christina b1740 South Leith
Richard b1742 South Leith
Eupham b1747 South Leith
Alexander b1750 South Leith
Eupham Married William Butler and moved to Burntisland

oh that i could trace my family back that far - i have a christina aitken who married colin finnie in 1830 and none of the children can be traced. Thank you for you reply - who knows i may be able to work down now. izabel

Would be interested in the aitkens. Possibly south Leith Possibly Duddingston/
I have Aitken used as a middle name. Didn't know where it came from?
And Finnie used as a middle name. Have traced it.
Also Lindsay used as a middle name. Not traced.

I'm an Aitken by marriage of Newlands but don't get too excited, my husband's family originated from Lanarkshire. I do, however, have Volumes 1-3 of History of Peeblesshire if there's anything you'd like me to look up. Do you have any more details of the family address?
I know there is a Listonshields near balerno as a neighbouring shepherd was brought up there.
Newlands is a very small Parish and the local churchyard is only 3 miles from our farm if you'd like me to have a look.
